The northern mockingbird is slowly making its way ever further north; in the past its most northerly range was southeastern Canada, but they are becoming very commonly seen in southern British Columbia as well.
They are very plain-looking birds but their vocal range and penchant for mimicry is prodigious. When I lived in Arizona I saw them frequently, so I was delighted to spot one again here in Canada and hear its gorgeous song.

I passed this young deer as he was having a snack near a sidewalk.
He briefly stared at me before deciding I was of no consequence and returned to his yummies.
Meanwhile, his mom decided that she didn’t like me and crossed the road.
Not too quickly, but she made her point.

We have some very hot temperatures right now, so it’s important to go walking in the cooler morning hours. Penticton has many trails and paths from which to choose and with varying degrees of difficulty. Even in the morning, it was already quite warm and so we decided to take our time.
At one point, we were accosted by a gaggle of ducks and pigeons who were expecting handouts. This group is seriously used to interacting with humans.
It might be 40C (104F), but really, I prefer the heat over -40C (-40F). I have one more subarctic winter to go before returning permanently to Penticton where my time will be mostly my own!
