An Autumn Storm

A couple of days ago we had a major storm blow through. The wind was roaring and savagely bending the trees almost to the ground while the rain whipped furiously against windows and scudded down streets. But a few hours later, voilà! Sun and lovely clear air!

The wind had disappeared, the sun had come out and except for the dampness still in the air and the puddles on the ground, it was almost as if the storm hadn’t ever happened.

The sun even had a bit of power; it actually felt more spring-like than autumnal.

Okanagan Lake was strikingly beautiful in its calm and tranquil demeanour; there was no sign at all of the recent weather tantrum.

The wind did leave a reminder of its power, though. Heaps of leaves were left piled about in an explosion of colourful autumn detritus as if to say, “I’m gone for now but I’ll soon be back!”

Happy Sunday.

Snowbirds

We recently watched a Snowbirds air show: the Snowbirds are the Royal Canadian Air Force’s military aerobatics flight demonstration team. The show was delayed by a thunderstorm, but once it passed, they took to the air. Here are some highlights.

Seven of the team’s nine aircraft against a clearing sky …

… doing their close quarter, high speed passes …

… punctuated by fabulous starburst maneuvers …

… including a heart-shaped aerial attitude that I wasn’t able to capture as I wanted to watch the show as well as take pictures …

… among other fantastic maneuvers that are a wonderful demonstration of flying prowess. Here’s a short video.

It was a great show and brought a big smile to the face of this old pilot.

Happy Sunday.

Late Season Ducklings

I spotted this large brood of ducklings – nine in all – out learning about life with their mom.

I think this is either a late brood or a second brood. Ducks will sometimes “renest” if they lose the first nest or all of their hatchlings to a predator.

This may be the case with this brood or possibly the mother duck decided to raise a second family. That can frequently happen with ducks that don’t migrate since they don’t have to expend resources on migration; ours here stay through the winter.

Happy Saturday.

June 20’s Friday Fleurday

This time of year is so beautiful that choosing some flowers for fleurday can be rather difficult, but nevertheless, and since today marks the solstice, some choices had to be made. So in the solstice spirit, here’s today’s bouquet!

A very fresh daisy …

… a lovely matador rose …

… pretty pansies …

… and last but not least, some very delightful and very fragrant wild orange.

Happy Friday.
