Visiting the City

I saw this deer across the street as I was leaving home.

He seemed to have found some yummy leaves and was intent on chowing down. Normally I cross the road to where the deer is standing, but I didn’t want to bother him.

With the drought and fires this season, the animals have had a tough time of it and more and more are entering urban areas to find food. This includes an uptick in the number of bears coming into people’s yards, as shown in the recent photos below from Quesnel, British Columbia; the entire article is here.

This is a grizzly bear. Black bears are more commonly found in urban areas but grizzlies are different. They dislike and avoid humans, so this tells me that they are being driven by hunger.

This underweight grizzly is pulling crabapples from a tree in a residential yard. Given the difficult summer they’ve had, we will likely begin to see more of them trying to fatten up for hibernation and will need to be cautious.

Happy Wednesday.

SPAWNING TIME

It’s that time of year again, spawning time. This year we’ve had poor rain levels and so that in turn makes the streams low. When the streams are low,…

SPAWNING TIME

An amazing picture of a bear capturing some dinner from Wayne at Tofino Photography. Wayne is concerned about our low water levels and the effect this will have on the salmons’ ability to swim upstream to spawn. Please click on the link above to read more.

Urban Walk

There are lovely walking paths throughout Penticton. A favourite, nearby path is next to the creek which is undergoing restoration at the moment, but for the most part this doesn’t detract from its allurements.

Night creek.

It has a great night ambiance …

In the distance is the foot bridge that was temporarily removed but will soon be re-opened.

… and during the day as well. Some sections have lots of foliage and other parts are a bit denuded because of the revitalization project, but there will be new growth.

Creek peek.

The holly bushes that frequently border the creek are starting to to turn red as the picture above shows. They will be completely red in time for December, but in the meantime it’s great to enjoy the comfortable temperatures and sunny days that we’re still experiencing.

Happy Tuesday.

September Lovelies

We are having a very lovely month with sunny warmth and windless days.

There are many flowers still blooming away and not showing any signs yet of slowing down.

Lots of sunflowers are still fresh and vibrant in their daily sun-follow.

This frilly rose could have easily been a spring bud, but it decided to wait.

Although it’s late for peonies, their heady scent and massive blooms are still lingering in some gardens, depending on their cultivar.

Happy Sunday.

An Autumn Tone

We have entered a period of beautiful weather: warm, sunny and windless. The lake has been like a millpond.

But there’s something undefinably autumnal about the tone and atmosphere, as if the earth is releasing a long held breath and settling into a comfortable chair before heading into winter. The geese are eating and flocking; the leaves are starting to turn and the very air seems to be drowsing.

It’s time to enjoy this lovely pause.

Happy Friday.
