Deer Time

I saw many lovely deer over the summer.

These well camouflaged little ones are hard to see, and not too concerned, either. They all stared at me and then resumed their ignoring.

A dear deer ear.

When it’s time for rest, rest. We humans could learn from that attitude!

While out for an evening ramble, this deer pair followed me for a bit on the sidewalk before veering off to enjoy something yummy in a parking lot. These photos aren’t great as they were taken at night with my cell, but they give the idea.

I hate it when my foot itches!

I love these. I don’t care what they are; I just love ‘em.

Don’t bother me while I’m eating!

Happy Thursday.

Oh Deer!

I saw this deer in our neighbour’s yard across the lane from our deck. Deer often visit his yard; there’s nothing much to eat there but they see it as a safe place for a nap.

Usually they arrive in twos, threes or fours, but this one was alone.

When she heard me talking to my husband she waggled those amazing ears and turned to look at me. She was completely unconcerned, just wondering why I needed to be noisy while she was trying to rest.

Happy Mother’s Day Sunday. 💛

Daisy Deer

We recently saw this mule deer when we were hiking in a provincial park.

She looked up from whatever yummy plant she was eating, waggled her ears, posed, let me take a picture and then went right back to her lunch.

She looked so beautiful and unconcerned as she stood among the daisies, feeling comfortable that no harm would come to her.

Happy Monday.

March in Review I

Although March can be a rather iffy month when it comes to weather, I did get some photos that I liked.

Ducks and fish together in the Japanese garden koi pond. They paid no attention to each other.

Evening lake reflection …

… and a rosy reflection goose.

Okanagan Lake from a beach in Naramata …

… and visiting spring deer.

Easter greetings. 🐇

Night Strollers

A few evenings ago as we were returning home from a nearby restaurant, we saw a couple of night strollers.

After stopping at the bank, they continued across the road to a park.

Completely unconcerned about our presence, they were like any other couple out for an evening constitutional, except that they tended to ignore the traffic signals.

These aren’t the best photos because I took them with my cell, but the deer still look adorable. I love that they feel comfortable enough to come wandering through, without fear or worry.

Happy Friday.

Reindeer

We were having lunch at a favourite restaurant overlooking the lake when we spied a reindeer.

Is Santa about to make an appearance?
Well, maybe not …
… since this is not a reindeer.

In North America, reindeer are called caribou (unless they’re domesticated, in which case they‘re called reindeer – confused yet?), but they’re actually the same animal, domesticated or not.

The one above is actually a lovely little forest deer, but his appearance was very appropriate I thought, especially for December 23.

Do you like our December weather? It’s a fantastic break from all the rain!

Happy December 24.

Visiting the City

I saw this deer across the street as I was leaving home.

He seemed to have found some yummy leaves and was intent on chowing down. Normally I cross the road to where the deer is standing, but I didn’t want to bother him.

With the drought and fires this season, the animals have had a tough time of it and more and more are entering urban areas to find food. This includes an uptick in the number of bears coming into people’s yards, as shown in the recent photos below from Quesnel, British Columbia; the entire article is here.

This is a grizzly bear. Black bears are more commonly found in urban areas but grizzlies are different. They dislike and avoid humans, so this tells me that they are being driven by hunger.

This underweight grizzly is pulling crabapples from a tree in a residential yard. Given the difficult summer they’ve had, we will likely begin to see more of them trying to fatten up for hibernation and will need to be cautious.

Happy Wednesday.
