I first posted the following in 2022. I have updated the photos and some of the text, but otherwise, the sentiment remains the same.
In Canada, today is Boxing Day. It has nothing to do with sport but rather with the idea of “boxing up” the leftovers from Christmas feasting (including unwanted presents) to give to those less fortunate. Over the centuries, it has also largely diverged from its U.K. antecedents. I was raised with the notion that Boxing Day is for providing volunteer service (I was allowed to choose – and I always chose the SPCA – but I wasn’t allowed to skip it); however, I think that this philosophy has long since disappeared.

Perhaps we ought to try to bring back Boxing Day volunteerism or other forms of giving. I am tired of the Boxing Day sales that have now morphed into “boxing week” sales – whatever those are, I’m sure you’re really not going to save anything – that are bringing into disrepute a day that used to be about selflessness and giving.

Considering the narcissistic spending focus at this time of year – something that is industriously promoted by all businesses – a little required volunteerism might go a long way to helping a great many people, including those that do the volunteering.

Food for thought.
Happy Boxing Day.
A little break in the rain …

… gives us some lovely December scenes.

Sleeping trees, plants and shrubs accompanied by ever hopeful ducks …

… with a pink-toned sky above a resting lake.
Happy Tuesday. 🎄

Here in the Okanagan, the natural weather pattern in the winter is rain, but now and then we get some very precious sunny periods.

When a bit of December afternoon sun arrives …

… it’s a very lovely thing …

… to be treasured and prized to get us through the next onslaught of rain.
Happy Monday.
On the shortest day of the year, I wish you Happy Solstice!

From here on, the days get longer, much longer.

While I find the mist and overcast lustrously beautiful in its own way …

… I much prefer spring.
Happy Sunday; it’s a tiny bit longer this week.
A few days ago we had a very wet snowfall that lasted a couple of hours and then turned to rain. Some of the oak trees were still hanging on to their leaves and as a result they became covered in wet, heavy snow.

A few were still a bit green yet most had dried and were just clinging …

… but the weight of the snow put an end to that. The sidewalks were covered in oak leaves; the last bit of autumn finally found its way to the ground.
Sometimes, even the trees can be stubborn!
Happy weekend.

Season’s Greetings!
Two weeks ago we experienced a phenomenal winter sunset; I posted some of the pictures of it here, but there are several additional others that I quite like.

The rosy winter colours were particularly beautiful …

… and I loved the reflection on the lake’s surface.

The lake was so calm that it was an almost perfect mirror.

I stood watching this lovely show until it was over …

… so happy that I hadn’t missed it.

I hope you have a very happy – and very rosy – Thursday.

This was taken with the exposure biased 1-2/3 stops darker to keep the little human figure from being washed-out. Mid-tones were then tweaked …
