Reblog: King of the Frost

January, doing as January does – dressing fence posts with silver, roofing puddles with ice, recasting foxes as a ripple of running flame. The …

January Sun

We were supposed to get some serious overcast accompanied by wet snow over the last few days, but apart from the cloud cover …

… we escaped. We had rain, but it never did get cold enough for any kind of snow.

And then we got this lovely little gift …

… clearing skies and sunshine …

… along with these cute deer who were also enjoying the weather break by lounging in a neighbour’s yard.

Happy Monday.

Marmot Sightings

We have a large marmot colony living nearby in the rock breakwater next to an area of the lake.

They are awake, active and very healthy looking after their hibernation.
They will allow people to observe them but getting too close makes them nervous and they will disappear into their large communal burrow below the rocks.
I love how they are constantly greeting each other with great affection and murmurings.

All marmots, including the ones above, are protected in British Columbia, especially the Vancouver Island marmots which have been brought back from the brink of extinction but whose numbers are still critically low.

Happy Tuesday.

Night Strollers

A few evenings ago as we were returning home from a nearby restaurant, we saw a couple of night strollers.

After stopping at the bank, they continued across the road to a park.

Completely unconcerned about our presence, they were like any other couple out for an evening constitutional, except that they tended to ignore the traffic signals.

These aren’t the best photos because I took them with my cell, but the deer still look adorable. I love that they feel comfortable enough to come wandering through, without fear or worry.

Happy Friday.

Northern Mockingbird

The northern mockingbird is slowly making its way ever further north; in the past its most northerly range was southeastern Canada, but they are becoming very commonly seen in southern British Columbia as well.

They are very plain-looking birds but their vocal range and penchant for mimicry is prodigious. When I lived in Arizona I saw them frequently, so I was delighted to spot one again here in Canada and hear its gorgeous song.

Happy Saturday.
