A picture of a grand old tree, courtesy of Stuart. These ancients are essential to the health of our planet.
The Japanese lilacs really are trees rather than bushes, unlike the common lilac which is more accurately a flowering woody plant.

Right now there are a number of Japanese lilac trees blooming in a nearby park.

The blooms were in various stages but the trees looked lovely.

Isn’t late spring (almost summer) wonderful?

Beech trees hang on to their leaves throughout the winter.

I tried to find out why beeches quite firmly keep their dry, winter leaves until the new ones push through, but there were no definitive answers.
This one had dropped all of its nuts and deer and other animals were getting some early spring nutrition, but nature’s reasons for hanging on to the leaves remains a mystery.

The snow is starting to disappear from these needles.

I am sure however that winter isn’t finished with us yet. It will try to re-assert itself and will snow, huff, blow, and swirl, but its efforts will dwindle until … spring!
