Deer Time

I saw many lovely deer over the summer.

These well camouflaged little ones are hard to see, and not too concerned, either. They all stared at me and then resumed their ignoring.

A dear deer ear.

When it’s time for rest, rest. We humans could learn from that attitude!

While out for an evening ramble, this deer pair followed me for a bit on the sidewalk before veering off to enjoy something yummy in a parking lot. These photos aren’t great as they were taken at night with my cell, but they give the idea.

I hate it when my foot itches!

I love these. I don’t care what they are; I just love ‘em.

Don’t bother me while I’m eating!

Happy Thursday.

First Day of Autumn

Today is the first day of autumn so unfortunately, summer is officially over. It’s also a Monday though and because of that I hope these late summer scenes ease you through yet another weekly start.

A warm beach …

… a pretty tea rose …

… a transitioning hydrangea …

… and a sunny lake.

I hope your day goes well – happy autumn!

Grasses

Although in the northern hemisphere many of the flowers are beginning to fade, there are so many interesting grasses now coming into their own.

There is a multitude of them …

… in so many shapes and sizes …

… and colours, too …

… so varied and pretty …

… as they go to seed in all their frondy, wispy glory.

Happy Sunday.

Autumn Approaches

While out for a ramble I heard a very distinctive sound: that unmistakable rattle of dry leaves in a gust of wind; there they were, swirling on the ground in a sure demonstration of the unstoppable arrival of autumn.

We’re still very green, but even those leaves seem to make that particular rattling sound once September arrives. It’s understandable. By turns it has been hot, dry, smoky, and windy. They’re tired.

But among all that greenery the autumnal colours are slowly creeping in. Everything in life starts small.

Although autumnal yellows are often the first colours to show, I’ve already noticed some reds, too.

The Oregon grape is changing its dress …

… while the matador roses that bloom so beautifully and unceasingly from June through August, are beginning to slump.

Summer officially ends in less than two weeks and while it’s a bit sad to see it go, autumn is a wonderful season with its graceful and stunningly beautiful characteristics. I’m looking forward to it.

Happy Wednesday.

Looking Back

It recently occurred to me that this blog has been running since October, 2012 – quite a long time. Although it’s not my blogversary, I feel like doing a photographic “looking back” series and posting some pictures that have been buried for a while. These are not necessarily great photos, they’re just photos that I like, that evoke strong feelings.

Orchards …

These pictures are from an early autumn holiday visit to the Okanagan Valley in 2012. We knew we loved it, but didn’t know then that we would eventually move here.

… a distant boat …
… and M and I hiking among the grape vines.

Good memories of a lovely holiday.

Hanging On

A few days ago we had a very wet snowfall that lasted a couple of hours and then turned to rain. Some of the oak trees were still hanging on to their leaves and as a result they became covered in wet, heavy snow.

A few were still a bit green yet most had dried and were just clinging …

… but the weight of the snow put an end to that. The sidewalks were covered in oak leaves; the last bit of autumn finally found its way to the ground.

Sometimes, even the trees can be stubborn!

Happy weekend.
