The day closes …

… the lake drowses …

… in the late summer heat.

Happy Saturday.

In this hemisphere summer is starting its slow slide toward autumn. Although the temperatures are still high and lots of people are on holidays, the angle of the sun and the shorter days are highlighting the age of the season. I’m also starting to see it in the types of flowers that prefer this time of year.

Yellow coneflowers (with some barberry in the background that’s beginning to turn red) …

… and mountain hydrangeas are obvious examples …

… but so are these pretty pink roses; they definitely have a late season look about them.
Happy Friday.
We visited a favourite winery for lunch.

It has fantastic views of Okanagan Lake from its perch high above on the western side …

… and an excellent restaurant with, of course, excellent wine.

It was so good in fact that we had to do some walking afterwards – with lots of extra water – to make sure we were safe to drive home!
Happy Thursday.
Every year there are awards for comedy wildlife photos. Here are a few of the entries that I think are particularly great.

Happy Wednesday.
I like how the mallard ducks seem to get on with almost everybody.

They are tolerated by the notoriously grumpy and aggressive Canada geese …

… and by the extremely nervous quail.

But those are other birds. Nevertheless, they clearly aren’t bothered by a whole other species swimming underneath them …

… even when the fish pop up to grab a bug.
If we could all get along this well – or perhaps ignore each other this well – our world might be a very calm place.
Happy Tuesday.
A favourite public garden where I frequently walk ..

… beautiful in its August summer dress.

Happy Monday.
Red tinted maple tree seed pods …

… against a blue sky background …

… with some sunny hydrangeas, too …

… and a sunflower for spice …

… makes for a lovely August day.
Happy Sunday.
Although it’s raining here today – a huge low has moved over much of British Columbia, bringing with it the rain needed to dowse some forest fires – we have entered the “dog days of summer.”

The “dog days” are so-called after the star Sirius, which is also referred to as the “dog star.” Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, becomes visible above the eastern horizon during the pre-dawn hours in August.

During ancient times, the August arrival of Sirius was associated with heat, drought, thunderstorms, humidity, illness and even bad luck.

So, why is it called the “dog star?” Well, that’s because it’s the brightest star of Canis Major, the “great dog” constellation. In ancient times, Canis Major was thought to be the pet of the constellation Orion because like a loyal and faithful dog, it followed Orion across the sky.

All that history of star-gazing the constellations has come down to us today through the simple phrase “dog days of summer” and of course, through the old symbol of Sirius radio, a flop-eared dog with a star as its eye.

Happy Saturday.
Pretty pond lilies …

… in creamy yellow and pink …

… another of summer’s lovely gifts.

Happy Friday.

A favourite beach near our home. We feel very fortunate this summer that we’re not enveloped in fires, smoke …

… or humidity.
Happy Thursday.
