Reblog: The Survivors

We finally have some rain. It is supposed to continue through the night. It has been a long dry summer with only a couple of short showers to get us …

The Survivors

In spite of the drought, here are some beautiful garden pictures from Jenn at Still Bitchy After Sixty. Please click the link above to see more of her garden photos.

August 1’s Friday Fleurday

Can you believe it’s August already? Although it has been a very hot, humid and uncomfortable one for many of us, I hate to think of it as beginning a slide toward autumn. Nevertheless, there are still lots of flowers to enjoy and easily for the next couple of months.

The tea roses have been blooming like crazy, their faint rosy perfume quite detectable in the warm air …

… while the matador roses have been doing the same.

These are very ordinary, commonplace roses that will grow almost anywhere …

… but I do love seeing them lining footpaths and sidewalks. So pretty.

Happy Friday and happy August.

Panicle Hydrangeas

Tis the season for panicle hydrangeas; they tend to bloom in late summer and well into autumn.

The word “panicle” means “loose cluster,” which I think is an appropriate description for these pretty flowers.

Usually, panicle hydrangeas grow to about 2-3 metres (8 ft) and the blooms will turn some shade of pink or light red. They are the hardiest hydrangeas and will tolerate extremes of heat and cold.

It’s lovely that these plants extend the blooming season into the autumn. Although they do not change colour due to soil chemistry, shifting temperatures trigger these plants to transition from creamy white to pink or red.

Happy Thursday.

Night Garden with Moon

My wonderful friend C has an equally wonderful yard. It took her many years to bring it around.

She has many beautiful, mature trees, a small pond, and a vegetable patch.

Loads of flowers, ornamental plants and a gurgling stream complete this garden oasis.

It is truly stunning but also relaxing. My friend has built a remarkably calming haven in the middle of a dense and busy neighbourhood.

On a recent night, we sat on her large comfortable deck, ate good food, listened to sleepily twittering birds, and watched the sun go down and the bats flit in search of dinner. We talked and spent time together.

Thank you, C.
