Summer Hibiscus

The hibiscus flowers have recently been blooming in great profusion.

Hibiscus “plants” are actually considered to be woody shrubs or small trees; they can grow to three metres (10 feet) or more.

They come in a variety of colours and are also known as “rose mallow” and “rose of Sharon.”

Whatever they’re called, they are beautifully showy and frilly additions to a garden, especially if you are looking for something that will grow to quite a height and perhaps also provide some privacy as well as lovely flowers.

Happy Monday.

My photos here show how beautiful is our world. I hope to encourage viewers to help save it from our carelessness. Today, I give you a shot of a path…

A beautiful trail photo from Stuart’s Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. There are many gorgeous photos on Stuart’s site so I hope you stop for a visit.

Green, Green and Green

Because we have been fortunate enough here in avoiding the worst of the drought and forest fires, we have lots of rich green to celebrate.

Hedgenettle or lamb’s ear.
Lovely lily pads.

Tree fruit orchards abound and are producing many yummy delights from apricots to pears.

A deer enjoying some fallen apricots.

And not to be forgotten of course, vineyards.

Height-of-summer wine grapes.

Hostas are at their peak, with their lovely variegated leaves and notice-me flower stalks.

Blooming hostas.

Isn’t summer great? Happy Saturday.

Rufous Hummingbird

We have had lots of rufous hummingbirds visiting the hanging flowers on our deck.

They are very difficult to capture and moving quickly with the camera is necessary, but sometimes you can get a decent capture.

Unlike the Anna’s hummingbirds that over-winter in British Columbia, the rufous hummingbirds head to Mexico when it gets cooler. It’s amazing that these tiny birds so successfully make the trip, sometimes multiple times according to the band tracking. They are definitely little toughies.

Happy Hummer Friday.

Taking the Long View

From a trail above Okanagan Lake there are many lovely views.

We like to hike this trail a lot.

This was a beautiful day unaffected at that time by a large fire to the south of us in Washington.

The blaze crossed the border and has caused some local smoke; we understand that headway has been made by the hardworking firefighting crews, however.

Happy Wednesday.

Sometimes, life is like that.
