Emerald City

During the winter in particular, the city of Victoria experiences near rain forest conditions. As you can imagine, that means lots of green.

Because of all the moisture, the moss is particularly well developed.

It ranges from these little yellow bits …

… to these long, luxurious strands …

… and can even envelop whole tree limbs to such an extent that other plants decide to grow in the moss. The thick layer of moss on this tree branch is now providing a home to a fern family.

So not only is the grass still green and many of the plants and shrubs are still vibrant, there is the added and ubiquitous presence of moss and its lovely hue, a distinct counterpoint to the overcast and rain of the season.

Happy weekend.

A Weather Break

We had some sun! The wind was rather chilly but after all these grey, rainy days, it was nice to enjoy a bit of brightness.

Silvergrass – so pretty in the late autumn and winter.
There are still a few leaves around. Do you see the decorative bauble?

As we moved into the afternoon the sun started to disappear behind some cloud, but my, it was a terrific little break!

Happy Saturday.

Rainy Season

We’re deep into November now and have entered the rainy season. If the weather sticks to its usual patterns, we will have a lot of rain and cloud for about the next two months.

Chittamwood trees retain their leaves quite late into autumn.

We still have a little colour around that’s breaking up the grey motif, but probably not for long. Soon we will rely on seasonal light displays and plants such as poinsettias to bring us some relief.

Rainy lace leaf maple.

The lace leaf maples are beginning to turn purple – the colour change stage they enter before dropping their leaves – and a light rain accompanies almost every step we take.

Lace leaf maple in its late autumn stage.

Lots of bushes and trees will retain a duller shade of green as they rest through the winter until they’re ready to once more provide us with their beauties.

Happy Saturday.

Is It Spring or Autumn?

After our blustery, rainy series of days, the weather cleared up and today we had sun. It in fact felt a bit spring-like …

Okanagan Lake

… except for the autumn colours …

… and the fact that we apparently have another storm on the way that will probably be making the skiers very happy. There’s supposed to be a lot of snow in the mountains but falling as rain here in the valley which suits me just fine!

Windy and Wet

Over the last couple of days it was intermittently windy and raining.

The gulls were huddling near the shore; it wasn’t a great day for flying.
And although it was very grey, this was offset by some great autumn colours.
Orange, red and yellow leaf litter.
A red lace maple next to a green autumn rhododendron.
A transitioning maple tree.
A view from our deck, pretty nice despite the rain and overcast.
And last but not least, another lace maple with its gorgeous fire engine red fronds.

Happy Wednesday.

Ginkgo Trees

The ginkgo biloba trees turn a lovely yellow in autumn.

Their fan-shaped leaves are beautiful, either in green or yellow.

They usually assume their golden hue very suddenly, almost overnight, and then the leaves fall quickly, too.

When they change colour they have to be enjoyed in the moment; there’s definitely no waiting!

Happy Wednesday.
