Autumn

There are many lovely symbols and rituals associated with autumn, but all of them are bittersweet, implying as they do the death of the season and the impending colder months.

Big bins of honey crisp apples, cool and crunchy; the last of summer in their sweetness.

Restless swathes of leaves, swirling and settling, settling and swirling.

Green with yellow highlights becomes a lovely and familiar sight.

Happy Friday; happy Thanksgiving weekend. 🦃

Metamorphosis

Autumn is here with its colour and drifting coolness and many of the trees are beginning to change.

Some quickly turn yellow all at once while others hold off; they hang on to their green finery as long as they can.

Others turn an impressive red.

The orangey-yellowish-red ones look very showy in the sun.

Whatever your colour preferences, it’s a very pretty interval as we enjoy this precious time before winter’s arrival.

Happy Thursday.

Autumn Blue Hour

As a pilot I have often seen the blue hour effect, something I’ve enjoyed experiencing over the years.

It happens when the sun is well below the horizon but its blue wavelengths are still visible.

In these shots there is some amplification from the cloud cover, but I like the effect. The interplay between light and dark is one of the amazing sights our spectacular natural world has to offer.

Happy Wednesday.

After the Wind

Recently, we had some continuously windy and rainy weather for about five days, although each evening the wind died away and the atmosphere relaxed into night.

The rain was generally persistent throughout the evening and night periods but sometimes there were clear breaks as well. This picture is of one of those clear breaks. The lake was like a mill pond while there was some mist in the distance and the lights began to be visible.

Happy Sunday.

Cloud Art

I saw some interesting cloud formations that were lit by an almost full moon.

The moon itself was rather impressive, but I thought the clouds were more compelling. I was hoping for a better picture (this was taken with my phone – I do need to be better about remembering my camera!), but I think it conveys an idea of what I saw.

Happy Friday; happy weekend.
