Lace-Leaf Maples

Lace-leaf maples start their spring with red, lacy leaves that over about the first two months appear to be more autumnish than springy.

April 27

Gradually, though, these leaves become a type of russet-green that signals their transition to the full green of spring.

This lace-leaf is about half-way between red and green.

November 6, 2024

I took the above photo in November, 2024. The lace-leaf in the earlier photos is pictured here in its fire-engine red, autumn garb. Isn’t it spectacular? From this peak, it gradually becomes more and more purple before losing its shrivelled leaves almost completely by February.

This photo from a couple of days ago shows an even more complete transformation to green. Its beautiful cascading shape and incredible colour changes would make it a lovely addition to any garden.

Happy Sunday.

Fresh Leaves

I love all the new leaves that are emerging or about to emerge at this time of year.

A balsam poplar leans over a swollen Penticton Creek with its swiftly moving spring run-off.
The new leaves of this lovely Japanese lace leaf maple will turn green as they mature but in autumn will become a glowing fire engine red.
A European plum – there are lots of plum trees about, both ornamental and fruiting. I think this one is an ornamental.
The shiny new leaves of the Norway maple are a lovely russet but will also turn green as they mature.

So much healthy growth to appreciate and admire. Isn’t spring grand?

Sights from a Ramble

During a recent ramble I saw that the new spring growth is almost glowing with freshness and health.

The delicate fan-shaped leaves of a ginkgo biloba tree are opening.
A late blooming magnolia sports its rich red flowers.
A larch tree with its lovely new frond-like green needles.
A flowering plum surrounded by lots of new growth all around.
Pretty periwinkles with their fresh leaves.

With a sunny day and gentle warmth, there’s so much to enjoy at this time of year. Happy Spring Sunday.

It Feels Like Spring

We’ve rotated enough in our turn around the sun such that in the last week or so, spring has, creeping on little kitten feet, arrived. The wind, while still cool, is soft and mellow and the sun feels fresh.

The sun peeks through bare branches that will soon be leafy.

There isn’t any foliage yet, but it won’t be long.

An azalea bud.

Next week our temperatures are supposed to climb again. Yay!

Happy Sunday.

Hanging On

A few days ago we had a very wet snowfall that lasted a couple of hours and then turned to rain. Some of the oak trees were still hanging on to their leaves and as a result they became covered in wet, heavy snow.

A few were still a bit green yet most had dried and were just clinging …

… but the weight of the snow put an end to that. The sidewalks were covered in oak leaves; the last bit of autumn finally found its way to the ground.

Sometimes, even the trees can be stubborn!

Happy weekend.

November Highlights

It was a rather rainy month but we definitely had some beautiful colours to admire, if only for a short time. Here’s a selection.

A fiery red maple and some blue sky, so it wasn’t raining all the time!
A sweet little duck looking for lunch among the leaves.
Leaves were everywhere.
I loved watching this swan family.
Lots and lots more leaves.
The hydrangeas lasted very well.
A lace leaf maple at the height of its autumn glory.
A little late afternoon sun. As the month wore on, the overcast took over and decided to settle in.
It rained a lot …
… and snowed a lot, but all that white stuff stayed in the mountains!

The beauties of autumn are mostly gone now but we’re entering a time of year for seasonal celebrations and lots of light displays. Not as good as nature’s shows but definitely also a lovely time of year.

Season’s Greetings.

Weather Buffet

We had a little sun followed by a little cloud followed by a little rain (which in the mountains was snow), so the weather has been very mixed.

A little sun seeps through to shine on one of the lake shores …
… but it quickly recedes …
… and we’re enshrouded again.

It has been very overcast and rainy but I’m very happy to report that we’re still snow-free here in the valley bottom.

Happy December!

A Weather Break

We had some sun! The wind was rather chilly but after all these grey, rainy days, it was nice to enjoy a bit of brightness.

Silvergrass – so pretty in the late autumn and winter.
There are still a few leaves around. Do you see the decorative bauble?

As we moved into the afternoon the sun started to disappear behind some cloud, but my, it was a terrific little break!

Happy Saturday.
