It’s not Easy Being Green

I originally posted this piece back in 2022. Here it is again, updated but still appropriate, I think. Cheers.

Today is St Patrick’s Day, and although I don’t have any Irish antecedents, my husband does. He is half-Irish. In fact, his surname is so Irish that it glows green in the dark.

I don’t really understand why St Patrick’s Day has become so popular – is it the green beer? the riddance of green snakes? – but since I’m a half-French frog, I do understand the green background and that it confers a certain ability to stand up to the preconceived notions of others. Nevertheless, as Kermit the Frog so famously said, “it’s not easy being green.”

So here’s to the Irish! May they live as long as they want, and never want as long as they live.

Warm Day

We recently had company come to stay for a few days, and we lucked out with some beautiful weather.

Okanagan Lake near Kelowna.

We visited a winery near Kelowna where, although the vines hadn’t awakened yet and the opposite mountain tops still had snow, the sun was warm and inviting.

A pinkish pinot gris for our spring day.

With a little wine, we sat outside, enjoying the warmth, view and soft breeze.

A lake boat far below.

It was such a lovely and relaxing spring day.

I’m not Irish but I love Ireland and have been fortunate enough to have had some very happy holidays there.

It’s been almost two years since my last visit and I so very much enjoyed it – the people, the lovely fresh food, the history. The weather was also lovely – something that I was told was unusual for that time of year – April.

Rain wouldn’t have mattered.

To all the Irish and all the Irish wannabes, Happy St. Patrick’s Day from a great admirer.
