I was recently thinking about where I was this time last year, both literally and figuratively.
2023
I loved working in the Northwest Territories, but I am happy to be where I am now – a lot warmer, whether that’s Dominicana or Penticton.
As we prepare to leave the Caribbean to return to a very rainy Okanagan Valley via an apparently also rainy Toronto, here are a few favourite photos.

The storm that passed a couple of days ago was quickly followed by another. I was awakened in the night to what sounded like a freight train outside my window, but turned out to be pounding rain and shrieking wind.
Earlier in the evening, I took a shot of an underlit tree with the rain pouring around it. With the addition of some soap an outside shower would have been completely possible!
On the beach, Poseidon and Triton were whipping up some oceanic discontent. We didn’t stay long and were happy to go inside before the worst came barrelling through!

The storm that passed by us dropping a lot of rain and whipping up the wind has continued on out to sea. It has left a disturbed ocean, however.
This photo doesn’t really do them justice, but these waves were quite high.
The red do-not-swim warning flags were out everywhere, but lots of people were going in the water anyway. The waves coming up on the beach were definitely powerful enough to knock down children or anyone who’s a bit unsteady. We took a long walk on the beach but didn’t swim.

A storm has passed through over the last 24 hours. It’s not a tropical storm per se, but the wind has been strong and it certainly has dumped a lot of rain.
The clouds suddenly rolled in and the wind picked up …
… the rain came down in torrents …
… but we will soon return to clear skies.

… a most impressive downpour ensued.
We read, did puzzles, and enjoyed watching the bucketing rain.

… such precious time in a precious place …
So fortunate.
I have never before seen a parakeet in the wild.
These are an amazing emerald green and blend so perfectly with the forests that they are almost indistinguishable.
They are presently under threat from people who trade in exotic birds and others who see them as pests. This pair (along with many others) are safe at the botanical garden outside Santo Domingo, however. They are very intelligent birds and are also incredible mimics.
I like the full moon’s effect …
… on the palm trees …
… it creates such a sense of romance.
