Weather Change

We have been getting quite a bit of rain lately, which has been terrific for two reasons. First, we’re gradually climbing out of our drought, and secondly, at the higher elevations it’s coming down as snow, which is a good thing for all the skiers and ski resort operators. Our nearby ski mountain, Apex, is apparently developing a good base layer.

If you look straight down the lake toward the low mountain at the other end, you can see some higher elevation snow.
As a result, the overcast, while not my favourite weather pattern, definitely has some advantages hidden in its silvery clouds.

As long as we continue to get rain down here in the valley, I’m very happy to welcome the mountain snow, even though driving conditions in the passes become demanding.

No one has ever had to shovel rain out of a driveway!

Happy Sunday.

  1. Snow in the mountains is a good thing and bodes well for next year. Weather in Van has been pretty rainy and cloudy, so unlike this time last year. Looks like La Niña is making a difference. Happy Sunday Lynette. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. I agree. The La Niña predictions are turning out to be spot on. Environment Canada thought it would arrive in November with rain and snow and yes, very different from last year! Apparently it’s looking good for a great ski season; last year’s was pretty truncated. Fingers are crossed here for a more “normal” (whatever that is now) winter with snow in the mountains and rain here in the valley. After all the drought and fires and extreme cold, I’m really hoping the agricultural sector gets a helping weather hand this winter!

    1. Hi Neil, we’re in a drought situation also, still climbing out of the 2023 doozy that caused all those fires here in western Canada, but we are doing better now. The La Niña weather effect has arrived with its rain and cooler temperatures; it is supposed to reach you as well around January or February.

    1. Glad to hear you’re getting some rain! We’re thankful for it as well. Thank you very much, but I’m staying out of the mountain passes for now, Lori. I’m just going to settle in and enjoy these lovely autumn colours. 😊🍂 Cheers.

        1. I did six winters in NWT. It starts early, leaves late and -45C is common. It can be beautiful, too, though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen clearer air anywhere. But that degree and length of cold is also a struggle and we wanted to live somewhere with a milder road through winter. But we’re fortunate that if we do want some, we can visit the mountains!

          1. Yeah, the early and late thing gets harder each year. I love super cold days as the sky is so blue and the air so crisp. But my fav is likely around -20. My husband’s is around -5. But we aren’t leaving here any time soon!

          2. For sure. The early arrival and late departure was getting really old, especially when dealing with anything mechanical in that cold. Ugh. I agree about those clear blue skies and frozen air. Very beautiful.

        1. That’s wonderful. I was never a very good skier which lead to lots and lots of falling, so when I got older I gave it up. I figured my chances of escaping a serious injury were running out!

          1. I will be happy to ski green at that age. I’ve got about 45 years experience, so I am decent and can pretty much ski anything although I have preferences. Like powder!!

    1. Thanks, Linda. Apparently La Niña has arrived and I believe will move into Ontario toward the end of the year. We all need rain, it seems. Certainly the ski resorts will be happy as last year was quite bad.
