Orange You Glad It’s Monday?

I’m betting that you’re definitely not, but here are some autumnal oranges that might provide you with a little flare to help you get through that nasty first day of the working week.

A beautiful big leaf maple (acer macrophyllum) glows with coppery colour …

… while the Japanese maple (acer palmatum) with its delicate leaves displays a delicate terra cotta hue to match.

A larger photo of the Japanese maple shows that some of its leaves are red or reddish; that’s because its leaves turn that colour first before gradually fading to orange.

And here are three Japanese maples showing a gorgeous – and reflective – reddish-orange.

Even though it’s Monday and can’t be avoided, I hope you have a good one.

Cheers.

Big Red

This sugar maple tree has turned a very classic shade of red.

Since it’s the sugar maple leaf that’s on our flag, I would say that this tree is a rather iconic representation of Canadiana.

Besides gorgeous red leaves in autumn and beautiful lumber, the sugar maples are also known for producing another icon – maple syrup.

I grew up with it and have always enjoyed that luscious sweetness in cookies, cakes and on or in many other things, too.

Sugar maples provide us with so much, both practically and aesthetically, but at the moment, I’m enjoying the amazing gift of this stunningly gorgeous autumn colour.

Happy first Monday of November.

Lace-Leaf Maples

Lace-leaf maples start their spring with red, lacy leaves that over about the first two months appear to be more autumnish than springy.

April 27

Gradually, though, these leaves become a type of russet-green that signals their transition to the full green of spring.

This lace-leaf is about half-way between red and green.

November 6, 2024

I took the above photo in November, 2024. The lace-leaf in the earlier photos is pictured here in its fire-engine red, autumn garb. Isn’t it spectacular? From this peak, it gradually becomes more and more purple before losing its shrivelled leaves almost completely by February.

May 14

This photo from a couple of days ago shows an even more complete transformation to green. Its beautiful cascading shape and incredible colour changes would make it a lovely addition to any garden.

Happy Sunday.

Maple Tree Brilliance

The sugar maples are such brilliant colour combinations right now. Enjoying a walk means also enjoying the glow from these trees – a wonderful autumn gift.

There are reds, greens, oranges and yellows on the same tree or a succession of trees – a stunning sight.

They don’t last long, but my, what a show!

Happy Tuesday.

Maple Glory

The sugar maple trees are stunning right now.

Walking under them is like being enveloped in a softly glowing, gentle dream.

I took these photos during Sunday’s (October 15) evening walk when it was wind-still and fresh, and the world felt like it was taking a breath.

Standing among them and looking up into their reaches conferred a strong sense of our smallness, of the sweep of life and our little bit within it.

Happy Tuesday.

Maple Leaves

Some of our national symbol maple trees are beginning their autumn colour-change ritual.

Many of the leaves are still green but others have begun their metamorphosis.

I love how the interior veins of the leaves turn red first, followed by the rest of the leaf as it becomes engulfed in colour before losing its tenacious grip on the twig and drifting to the ground.

I found this lovely example on the ground and decided to bring it home where it posed on my kitchen counter for a close-up.

Happy Saturday. 🍁
