A beautiful eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly from Stephen Gingold. I hope you stop by Stephen’s blog to see more of his fabulous nature pictures.

Swallowtail Visit

A very large, lovely swallowtail butterfly visited my deck to investigate my hanging plants.

I initially thought it was a hummingbird, but when I went out to investigate, saw that it was instead a pretty butterfly.

It danced unpredictably and undecidedly from plant to plant for a bit as I scrambled awkwardly with my cell phone camera to get a picture or two.

Then our charming guest fluttered delicately away, off to do other butterfly things, while the rooted human still thrilled to the moment.

Happy Thursday.

Butterfly Beauty

Penticton is home to the western tiger swallowtail butterfly. They are primarily yellow with black stripes and also some blue sections near the distinctive “swallowtail,” so-called because of their similarity to the swallow family of birds.

I saw this one while walking through the Penticton rose garden.

Unfortunately, their numbers are declining because of pesticide use and measures are being taken in some areas to support them, including raising them from caterpillars.

Happy Monday.
