Lovely Black Maple Trees

One of the maple species that tends to be overshadowed by the red and sugar maples is the black maple (acer nigrum). So-called because of its dark brown trunk, the black maple is a lovely shade tree.

They have a beautiful shape and in autumn, their large green leaves turn a combination of orange, red and yellow.

They are related to the sugar maples to the extent that some botanists consider them to be a subspecies and they can also be tapped for syrup.

They can grow up to 34 metres (112 ft) and will develop a dense crown which encourages people on a hot day to sit underneath with a cool drink.

October Perspectives

We had a very hazy sunset that was followed by another wind and rain storm. At times the wind reached 80 km (50 miles).

It seems that this autumn, we have to enjoy its beauties while peering around or avoiding the storms.

I hope this means that the weather is blowing itself out and we will have a gentle little winter!

Marvellous Maples

The Canadian red maple trees are turning.

Ranging in autumn colour from light orange to fire engine red, these trees are very hardy and thrive in a wide variety of climate and soil conditions.

Although they look lovely throughout the year, they absolutely shine during autumn. There are groves, thickets and entire forests of red maples throughout this country which is one reason why they are our national symbol.

The other reason? They’re tough, hardy and resilient. 🇨🇦

Autumn Approaches

While out for a ramble I heard a very distinctive sound: that unmistakable rattle of dry leaves in a gust of wind; there they were, swirling on the ground in a sure demonstration of the unstoppable arrival of autumn.

We’re still very green, but even those leaves seem to make that particular rattling sound once September arrives. It’s understandable. By turns it has been hot, dry, smoky, and windy. They’re tired.

But among all that greenery the autumnal colours are slowly creeping in. Everything in life starts small.

Although autumnal yellows are often the first colours to show, I’ve already noticed some reds, too.

The Oregon grape is changing its dress …

… while the matador roses that bloom so beautifully and unceasingly from June through August, are beginning to slump.

Summer officially ends in less than two weeks and while it’s a bit sad to see it go, autumn is a wonderful season with its graceful and stunningly beautiful characteristics. I’m looking forward to it.
