The azaleas are out!

These are “ziggy” azaleas, and like roses which by any other name still smell as sweet …

… they are still beautiful no matter what they’re called.
Happy weekend. 🌸

Mmm… are these azaleas or rhododendrons?
As you may or may not know all Azaleas are Rhododendrons, but not all Rhododendrons are Azaleas. What is the difference I hear you ask? rhododendrons are larger shrubs than azalea plants, and they have larger leaves. Also, azalea flowers usually have five stamens, while the rhododendron flowers have ten and rhododendrons tend to be evergreen whilst most azaleas are deciduous.
Anyway, lovely to see them and even better if fragrant.

Hi Jude, yes, I do know the differences and that all azaleas are rhododendrons but that the reverse isn’t true. I would ordinarily label the flowers pictured as rhododendrons as they have all the characteristics, but the gardeners have erected a sign labelling this bush as the “ziggy azalea.” When I tried finding it online however, no luck. And I couldn’t find a gardener for an explanation, either. For now, it’s a mystery! Cheers.

I love azaleas, Lynette. I’m not sure if we were talking about an azalea garden outside of Washington DC another time, but I went there a long time ago and still remember how pretty the azaleas were!

I vaguely remember that, Barbara. The garden where I took these photos is full of azaleas and rhododendrons and when they’re all out, it’s breathtakingly beautiful. They really are a perfect flower for spring aren’t they?

They definitely are, Linda, and there are lots more to come. We had a gorgeous spring day today – short sleeves and no jacket – and I took my time to really admire them. Cheers.
