Moody Overcast

I encountered this glowering, very moody overcast while out for my daily walk.

When I left home, there was a white overcast but nothing remarkable; 45 minutes later these blue-grey, menacing clouds had filled the sky. I barely made it home before the skies totally opened up and buckets of rain came pouring straight down; there was no wind. From inside, it was beautiful to see, but I’m glad I avoided that particular soaking!

Happy Saturday.

  1. La Niña is giving a different look to this year’s spring, for sure. Hopefully that means higher water tables and fewer wildfires. Glad you got home dry Lynette. Happy Saturday. Allan

    1. Thank you very much, Allan. Agreed, La Niña is definitely slowing things down and keeping things cooler which probably isn’t a bad thing in light of our fire history from the previous few years. I was just crossing the road to my front door when it started to pour and then it kept steadily raining all night; a really good soaker. Cheers.

    1. Thank you very much, nellifant.

The use of “overcast” as a noun is certainly widespread here including in radio and tv weather reports and is also listed as a noun in the Canadian Oxford. I suspect that usage likely originated with aviation which describes cloud cover in fractions of overcast (I’m a pilot and am familiar with aviation weather language). Thanks for the question! I hadn’t thought of its usage and it was interesting looking it up. Cheers.

    1. And March is so unpredictable, as well. After the rain storm that poured for about 12 hours the sun came out and we had 16. Initially rather misty but pretty great later on. Cheers.

    1. I was lucky, for sure. It was starting just as I was crossing the street to my door, and it was intense. I think you literally could have washed your hair in it, it was that powerful. Its intensity dropped off a bit but it continued to come down for the next 12 hours. We now have very green grass and very full creeks and rivers! Cheers.
