I found these little matador roses blooming merrily along in a protected little corner next to a walkway.

Such a lovely January find!

Happy Friday.

Thanks, Jo. 😊 They were such an unexpected, lovely find, especially on a very rainy, grey day!

Funnily enough, Lynette, we’ve come home to curious goings on in our garden. It’s the middle of January. The snowdrops are in bloom (they should be) but not in great numbers. The winter flowering cyclamen which are normally colourful by Christmas, are only just peeping out. The daffodils are all up but not yet in bud (a little early), but most incongruous of all, three different rose bushes are still producing new blooms – in January! Snowdrops and roses?? What’s going on ?!?

I’m not sure, Phil, but it’s likely caused by climate change in some way or other. So far, our winter has been perfectly regular for this area with lots of rain and overcast; fingers crossed it stays that way given all the orchards and wineries we have. But I’ve heard of lots of weirdisms like yours going on, too. Allan (below) who lives 940 km northeast of us is commenting on strange events in his area, too.

That is a good sign. Strange things are happening here with the weather too. The plants are confused by the warm/cold sequence and I spotted some pussy willows open recently, about 2 months early. Happy Friday. Allan

That’s crazy, Allan. I understand that you’re cold and snowy today, so that’s not going to help the poor little pussy willows. You’re right about the confusion; next week you might have +10 and sun! Apparently our winter has been within norms for this area, something that’s also becoming increasingly rare.

A perfect spot of color! Reminds me of the “unexpected red” interior design theory that was popular last year.

It was such a lovely little surprise to come around the corner and see the two little red spots. I did register that design theory but didn’t pay much attention to it. My idea of design is do I need to vacuum? 😉

What a lovely treat 😊. It must be a rare sight this time of year?

We are apparently having a winter that falls within norms (what are those? 😉) so it’s not unexpected to see them in protected areas. But yes, a lovely little treat. 😊

They’re certainly hardy, and beautiful. Excellent photos!

Thank you very much. 😊 The matador roses do seem to be exceptionally hardy but to be fair our winter so far has apparently been within norms for this area; not like last January when we had that terrible cold snap. Lots of rain and overcast with snow in the mountains; we haven’t had freezing temperatures much at all.

Wow. That’s unusual. Maybe it’s a sign for something good that is on its way.

Apparently our winter temperatures are within “norms” this year, so this is supposedly somewhat usual. I don’t really think so, though. Roses right now? Yes, maybe something good is on the way. 😊
