Are They Monochromatic?

We recently had a very wet snowfall that lasted only a couple of hours before melting. During this snowfall, though, the overcast that settled into the valley was extremely thick and low to the ground.

We were seemingly enveloped in grey. But then again, I have a question for you: has the above photo (and those that follow) been photoshopped to appear monochromatic or is it a “colour” picture of a monochromatic environment?

So, what do you think? Have I been playing with Photoshop to produce these monochromatic photos or was Penticton’s environment just rather grey?

    1. You’re completely right! I didn’t do any editing at all. Like you, we are just very, very grey right now! We had a bit of snow that lasted only a couple of hours but then it started raining and has been pelting down ever since. Ugh.

  4. After our experience on cloudy hikes in Jasper recently, I captured some shots I would sear were monochromatic. Winter light is funny. Great pix Lynette. Happy Wednesday. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. I agree. I also would swear that these have been adjusted to appear mono, but this is what the day looked like, especially over the distance such as down the lake. Yes, winter light can be so filtered and veiled. Cheers.

    1. Thank you very much, Tricia. 😊 You are right; no editing at all. I agree that the grey light has its own lustrous beauty, but I was surprised at its sort of gentle intensity. It was like being enveloped by a feather pillow. It’s definitely the time of year for it!

  6. it’s a gloomy winter day. It’s been unusually foggy here so we’ve had quite a lot of that gloomy look. I see from above that you didn’t photophobia and I’m not surprised. Maggie

    1. It was an exceptionally grey day, here, too. We tend to get socked in by overcast because we’re in a valley, but this was amazing. I felt a bit like I was inside a feather pillow as the sounds were all muted, too. So yes, no editing was required at all for this look! We have clear skies today which is really great.

    1. You have a good eye, John! There was no editing at all; that’s just how the day looked. Later on we started about 24 hours of pelting rain, so the grey continued! Today it’s much better with clear blue skies. 😊

  8. Since I’m a picture-taker, like you, I’ve taken many photos in winter that could’ve been mistaken for b&w. So, I figured these were natural. Very pretty, btw.

    1. Thank you very much. Good catch! It was such a grey day, Lori. Even the sounds were muted. I didn’t realise until I looked at the photos just how grey, however. The weather then followed up with 24 hours of pelting rain that produced an even more grey atmosphere! Today we have blue skies and sun, so it’s much better.

      1. At least you’re getting sun in between gray days. It’s been gray here for days now. We did have sunshine for about 2 hours after dawn this morning, but it went back to gray. With the daylight being short, it makes it feel dreary. Thankfully, winter solstice is almost here, then we start going back the other direction for daylight. 👍

        1. Yes, we have definitely been fortunate that way! During our latest 24 hours of rain it started to get dark around 3 p.m. but then I reminded myself that had I still been working in the north, it would have already been dark for an hour … I am with you on the solstice, Lori. I’m looking forward to passing that milestone!

  10. I can see the answer but you’ll have to believe me when I say that I was going to state that you hadn’t altered the photos at all. You see, living in England, we know very well what grey colourless days look like 😂

    1. I definitely believe you because I was a bit stunned when I first looked at the pictures. I remember those grey English days from childhood visits to the UK and we certainly get a lot of them here because we’re in a valley, but this was an incredibly grey day. Even sounds were muted. For sure no editing required on these for that monochromatic appearance!

    1. Thank you. You are right, Linda. There wasn’t any editing at all except a bit of cropping on one of them. I was quite surprised at how grey everything was that day, though. It was a bit like being inside a cotton ball as even sound was muffled.

    1. You are right, Penny, but I was quite surprised at how very grey these pictures are – at first glance they looked so monochromatic. We have been mostly quite overcast here and the occasional bit of sun feels so wonderful!
