The Beauty in the Overcast

It has been very rainy and overcast – a rather normal situation for this region as we move into winter – but there has been a lot of beauty in it, too.

There has been very little wind, the lakes have been mirror calm and the lustrous clouds have cocooned the valley in a sense of tranquility.

After a brisk walk in the 5 or 6 degree temperature (41-43F), that sense of tranquility comes home with me and I enjoy a hot chocolate and a warm blanket.

This time of year can be so unrelentingly busy and the expectations can be really high, too, so it’s important to grab moments when you can enjoy a bit of peacefulness.

Happy Monday.

  1. Despite the promise of rainy days here in Vancouver, there have still been plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the days. I agree with your hot beverage and blanket scenario. Even though rain is not falling the cool weather is there. Happy Monday Lynette. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. We’ve mostly been getting a lot of light rain but this morning it was just bucketing down. It’s hovering around 5 or so, so we’re just dressing for it and going out anyway. Lately, if we waited for it to clear up, we would never go! We can see the snow falling at the upper elevations so I think the ski hill operators are going to be over the moon!

  2. Lovely photos, Lynette! The home my sister lives in is on the lake her and I grew up on, it had around 1 foot rollers on it a couple of days ago, it’s been glass smooth yesterday, very beautiful! Happy new week to you!

    1. Thank you very much, John. We haven’t been getting any wind for a while now. The low cloud in the valley is a good predictor of calm conditions, so no lake waves, not much of a ripple, even. Lots of snow in the mountains though which is going to make a lot of people very happy as it’s just in time for winter break!

  3. I love the dramatic photo of the clouds across the bay. It’s good you’ve grabbed a chance for a relaxing time outside. Here Storm Bert has battered Britain, luckily not so much in the area we are in but too windy for walks as so many fallen branches!

    1. Thank you very much, Annika. We’re in a deep valley so we get a lot of cloud in winter. I love how it clings to the valley walls and undulations and there’s also the interplay of light (when there’s a mix of cloud and sun). I always find it interesting. So sorry to hear about that storm; it sounds like you got walloped. I hope no one was hurt.

    1. Yes! We have them all! Would you like some back? 😉 We have snow in the mountains but here in the valley it’s about 5 or 6, so not too cold. Enjoy your sun and blue sky, Anneli. You’ve earned it. 😊

    1. Thank you very much, Bernie. I’ve never thought of myself as sage, but I guess I’m getting to that age! Shovelling is good exercise but I’m glad I don’t have to do it any more. Enjoy your walk. 😊

  4. Glad you managed to spend some time outside despite the gloomy weather. The cold and rain is finally catching up with us as well. There’s even a bit of snow on the forecast later in the week, which I’m actually looking forward to. We’re planning to get our Christmas tree this weekend so it seems fitting.

    1. Thank you very much, Linda. I usually go for a walk even when it’s raining or cold; there are definitely no excuses as I have all the gear from my years in the north. For some reason I’m finding the short days difficult this year, even though I experienced much shorter ones in NWT. I agree that there needs to be at least a bit of snow. Have fun with your tree shopping! 🎄
