We have just completed 24 hours of slow, gentle rain, truly a gift for this parched, hot area. Fear of massive fires such as we had last summer were always with us, but we’ve been getting enough rain to keep the orange monster at bay, thankfully.

There are still signs of dryness but the soil has lots of moisture now …

… and the ponds are full.
Happy Sunday.
Happy Sunday. Looks lovely. And good to have the rain so that you don’t have risk of fires. I can remember last year reading blog posts from different people around the world and also the news in parts of the UK of fires that were going on because of the heat from the sun.

Thank you very much, Liz. Western Canada has been walloped, both last year and this year, by extreme heat followed by out-of-control fires. The damage has been terrible, particularly in Alberta and British Columbia. The area I live in (the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia) is naturally dry, but we need some rain. We’ve been getting showers now and then over the last couple of weeks but yesterday was a long, steady, soaking rain. Really perfect. 😊

Oh. I didn’t realise this year was as bad too with the fires, as I have not read about it to the extent I remember reading last year with how fires had been in places. So I am sorry to hear the fires have been bad also this year. I hope this long rain really helps.

Yes, this year has been bad, as well. I read recently that our forest fire smoke is now over Paris. Ugh. One of our oldest and most well known national parks was hit a few weeks ago and the damage has been awful. Here’s a link: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/visit/feu-alert-fire/feudeforet-wildfire
Many thanks for your good wishes. Much appreciated.

Yes, it’s bad.

This looks like a pleasant place for a peaceful walk. A prolonged period of soft rain is much nicer than heavy downpours that can do so much damage.

This is a favourite walking route, Jude. I agree; the soft rain is much more helpful. This was a long, steady, soaking rain, exactly what we needed.

Glad the showers are coming. We are getting a bit here too, but accompanied by high winds. No matter, we will take all the moisture we can get. Many farmers have already begun harvesting here, about 3 weeks early. Hope they manage a decent harvest. Have a great Sunday Lynette. Allan

Thanks, Allan. We’ve been getting them off and on for the last two weeks or so but this was a very steady 24 hours of soaking rain, exactly what we needed. Today we have the international Ironman competition and it’s sunny but cooler, perfect conditions for the contestants, so the timing of the rain couldn’t have been better. Yes, I read that the harvest is coming in early and just to complicate things, a rail strike. I hope it’s good one too, and the rail issues get promptly sorted. Cheers.

It sure has been. 😊 Last year at this time we had a terrible fire just up the valley with several communities evacuated and smoke so thick that we could hardly see across the road, so this lengthy, soaking rain has been a big relief. We love living here, Belinda (we planned it for a number of years). It is beautiful. 😊 Cheers.

Glad you got the slow, gentle rain. We had an aggressive storm blow through, but rain is rain I guess. Happy Sunday, Maggie

Us too. Crazy storm cell Saturday night that just hammered our area.

Thanks, Maggie. I saw that system moving your way on the weather. Sounds like a typical prairie rain storm after a prolonged period of heat. I remember those very well. Yes, they can be very aggressive. I hope there wasn’t any damage.

A gentle rain sounds great for the region, but I suspect more than one of those is required.

We have been getting showers now and then over the last couple of weeks, so that has helped, but this lengthy, soaking, steady rain was perfect. Yes, we are definitely in a moisture deficit and really need more of them. It’s the same story all throughout much of B.C. for the last couple of years.

I think we could safely say all of Western Canada is on that dry boat.

Yes, I haven’t looked at the online data for the prairies but it certainly seems so, especially for Alberta and even the NWT.

Happy Sunday! It was quite rainy here yesterday–a great day to just do baking projects, but today was sunny, so we took a walk. Cheers!

Thank you very much, Tricia. We have had some showers lately, but not a full-on rain in months. This was a very good thing!

Rain is always a good thing these days. We could use a good soaking.

We apparently have another one on the way – it’s big system encompassing most of BC – which will help with the forest fires. I hope you get a good one, too! 🌧️
