Bright Captures

In common with the rest of western Canada, we’ve suddenly turned colder. We’re still above 0C (32F) during the day but are going below 0 at night. Meanwhile, Vancouver, very unusually, is apparently going to get wet snow and minus temperatures overnight as well. Ugh.

Of course, here in the Okanagan Valley we have it comparatively easy. Much of the prairies are getting highs around -20C (-4 F). Strangely though, a lot of the east is coming in at +20C (68F) but may be getting much colder toward the end of the week. Nevertheless, if you’re about to travel from east to west, a 40 degree temperature difference might make for a bit of a packing challenge – such wild weather!

So to take our minds off these bizarre differences, I thought we could do with some brighter pictures of what is to come.

Nuthatch cuteness.
Eagle magnificence.
A butterfly tea rose.
A sunflower with friend.
Southern sunset beauty.

Happy Tuesday.

  1. Warm photos for a cold day. We are getting our February Freeze right now. – 26 with wind chill of -34 yesterday. Barely warmer today….but +2 by Friday. Happy Tuesday Lynette. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan.
That’s wild. And the east is apparently going to get the opposite with an 18 degree drop or thereabouts by the weekend. We have sun and +2 and have avoided the snow but the wind gives a good reminder that we’re not far from it. At least you got some moisture though – have to try to look at the positives in that cold!

    1. Thank you very much, Tricia. 😊
We have an eagle pair nearby our home that patrols the beach and water near the shore of lake Okanagan. Now and then I see them flying past with something for dinner in their claws. They’re so amazing to watch but my, they literally terrorize the coots with their strafing runs. I’m surprised they don’t try for the ducks but maybe I just haven’t seen that yet. The small bird is a nuthatch. They’re so cute. 😊

  2. Lovely photos. Nuthatches are so cute. Eagles aren’t often seen around here (although I posted a pic or two of rare sightings), so they fascinate me.

The temps here have seen more warm days than cold. We seem to get 4 or 5 days of warm, and then 2 days of cold. We’re in a 2-day cold snap right now. Then warm again.

    1. Thank you very much, Lori. 😊
Eagles usually want to be around large bodies of water (a big lake or river; the ocean, too) because they like to fish. And they also prefer to be near forests, as well, so that they can have good vantage points for hunting, so the taller the trees, the more comfortable they are. We are fortunate enough to have a pair near our home; we’ve seen them out hunting a lot. They were especially hunting the overwintering coot flocks that were on the lake up until recently. Agreed – they are fascinating.

Our weather isn’t cycling that fast but it certainly has been up and down for months. I don’t mind the rain but the cold is another matter, especially the wind we’ve been getting. Ugh.

          1. I’ve sent a test email which seems to have gone through. Weird, because there were no errors in your address the other times. This wouldn’t be the first time there have been issues with gmail, though. Cheers.

    1. The weather has been bizarre, Jo. We are the second-largest country in the world, so I don’t expect it to be the same or even similar everywhere, but a 40 degree difference at roughly the same latitude is extreme.
Yes, the nuthatches are so cute. I love to watch them. 😊

  3. Beautiful shots. That’s quite the variation in temperatures across Canada! It’s supposed to cool down here, but still remain well above freezing during the days. It’s hard to believe it’s only the beginning of March!

    1. Thank you very much, Linda. The temperature difference is crazy, and the fact that you had thunderstorms in February is concerning. Thunderstorm season is supposed to start in May, so that puts your climate about three months ahead. It’s probably a good thing to cool down a bit, although that warm weather is a pretty nice thing!
