This sudden, very unusually cold weather has caused the lakes to discharge a lot of mist since the water is so much warmer than the surrounding air. Some people have photographed mist spouts, but I haven’t been fortunate enough to see any of them.

One nice side effect of this cold weather is that’s it’s sunny, but I’ll be happy to say to good-bye to the sun as it begins to warm up (and consequently cloud up) tomorrow; thankfully, we are supposed to be at near seasonal temperatures by Friday.

This Arctic blast has been very hard on all the non-migrating birds and the animals that just aren’t used to these cold conditions; farmers are also very concerned about the tree fruit orchards and the wineries about their vines. As an indication of how unusual this weather is, a local environmental group just released instructions on how to help hummingbirds that are going into torpor because of the cold.

The eastern part of the country is now being walloped by a huge storm that has moved north from Texas. I don’t follow football but apparently a game has even been cancelled as a result!
Stay warm, everyone.
Stay warm you too. Happy Sunday!

Thank you very much. 🙂 I’ve had to dig out the heavy-duty winter clothes from my time in the north!

I hope the cold spell passes soon; people and animals will both be relieved to warm up.

I agree, Tricia. We are supposed to start warming up tomorrow with a return to seasonal or near-seasonal temperatures by Friday. Can’t come fast enough. I know that you’re experiencing unusually cold weather as well – I hope it’s warmer for you soon, as well!

I hope the fruit trees and vines and everything else aren’t damaged very much.

Thanks, Neil. I hope so too. The farmers put up huge field heaters and the wineries were continuously running their sprinklers so we’ll have to wait now to see how well they have come through it.

Crazy weather all across the continent. Even Vancouver yesterday was down to -10. -44C feels like -54C and extremely foggy here this morning. No wonder the jays are blue. Stay warm Lynette. Allan

Thanks, Allan.
That’s so true but not just for us; Europe has also just experienced unusually cold weather as well. So crazy! The last time I saw -44 was in January in Yellowknife, where that’s normal and expected. It is 7 degrees warmer here this morning than yesterday, so I hope all of us will be back to seasonal soon. Cheers.

I imagine the cold is particularly difficult on the birds there. I hope it warms up soon. Here in Ontario we’re back to typical January, cold and snowy. Lovely shots, Lynette!

Thank you very much, Belinda. 😊We have many that stay all year, including a type of hummingbird. I hope they come through okay. This has been so tough for them. Yes, I saw that you’re getting a good dose of the white stuff. Stay warm. 😊

The sky and the water are never the same twice, and you’ve captured some great changes here.

Thank you very much, Anneli. I was a bit surprised at the colour differences the camera was picking up in that interplay of light and shade.

Even though it’s cold, at least it looks beautiful.

It has warmed up considerably since I took that photo almost a week ago. I felt very sorry for the geese who had dug depressions in the sand and were huddling together, including with the ducks, to try to conserve warmth – geese don’t usually do that as they’re so standoffish, even with each other. It was very pretty with the mist coming off the lake, though.
