Smoke Scene

We have had extremely smoky conditions since Wednesday with a nearby forest fire contributing a lot of the smoke while more has been heading from those brutal fires 2200 km (1367 miles) to the north of us in the Northwest Territories.

This image courtesy of the B.C. Fire Service shows the smoke billowing from a huge fire about an hour north of us.

After a hazy evening on Wednesday we soon became absolutely choked with smoke and hit a “10” on the air quality index, which means that people really should stay inside unless wearing a mask.

Looks rather awful, doesn’t it?

We are thankfully expecting several days of rain within the next 24 hours though, so I hope we will soon be looking more like the above picture very soon!

Rocky Mountains – Kicking Horse Pass

I am on my way back to British Columbia from the Northwest Territories, this time via a more southerly route than the one I usually take.

Entering the Rocky Mountains through smoky skies.

Because of this extremely dry, early spring, there are ferocious wildfires in northern Alberta right now. The smoke from these fires is blanketing much of North America.

As we travelled west, the smoke over the Rockies began to decrease.

As we left the Territories, there were many evacuations and our drive through northern Alberta became rather tense when we encountered a long stretch of very dark, orange-hued, smoke-filled skies.

Although these views appear to be very smoky, this is an improvement over what we experienced in northern Alberta.

Long, gentle, soaking rains would be an excellent thing right now. Let’s hope we get some.

Smoky Moon

Right now we have a lot of smoke from a huge cross-border fire in Washington and British Columbia. The sky is literally overcast because of it.

Eerie red smoke moon.

The poor air quality is causing a very red harvest moon.

You can see the smoke even though it was quite late at night.

There seem to be intense wildfires everywhere. Here’s hoping for lots of steady rain, and soon.

Happy Tuesday.
