Glow

We recently had a very sunny day that started becoming overcast by mid-afternoon with clouds swiftly moving in from the south.

I was fortunate enough to leave for my evening ramble in time to see the sunset before it became completely obscured.

I very much enjoyed the counterpoint between grey and orange as the clouds began to envelop the evening sky.

Now that we’re heading into December the sunsets don’t last long – or may be shrouded by gloom – so I took the time to savour this one before it disappeared and the clouds had their way with the skyscape.

Clearing Skies

We’ve had a lot of rain – and wind, especially – lately, so it was fantastic when the wind started to die off and the skies began to clear.

Our autumn weather has been definitely interesting; most of September was hot and windy with daily temperatures around 35 or so (95F) but then it suddenly turned and became rainy and windy!

Although we’ve had the odd day or two of good weather, the wind and rain have really dominated … did I mention the wind? 😉

However, we are supposed to be entering a stretch of sunny, windless days with temperatures around 13 or 14 (55-57F); very comfortable for November!

I was very happy to go out for my ramble to see the sky clearing … and joy of joys! No wind!

Two Lakes, Two Days

A couple of days ago we enjoyed a beautiful autumn afternoon stop at Vaseux Lake which is 27 km (17 mi) to the south of us. It really was nice enough to have dawdled on the beach.

A couple of days later we experienced a different kind of beauty. It was cooler in a very familiar autumnal way and also a bit blustery, but the sky was so arresting with its layered cloud formations.

A Cloud to Respect

We’ve recently had some rather spectacular cloud formations. Here’s one, an excellent example of a towering cumulonimbus that’s reflecting the setting sun.

These clouds are known in aviation as “clouds of vertical development” and are extremely dangerous because they can contain hail, lightening, microbursts, wind shear and turbulence severe enough to break an aircraft apart, even a large commercial jet. Pilots are always very careful where vertical cloud development is concerned. These cloud types can also cause very dangerous thunderstorms and are precursors to tornadoes. Basically, a tornado is a towering cumulonimbus cloud gone absolutely wild.

If you see a towering cumulonimbus and it’s headed your way, you should always be cautious, especially if you live on the prairies where the flat topography and lack of obstacles such as hills or mountains allows for unimpeded, potentially destructive development.

Otherwise, you can marvel at these natural constructions and enjoy their visual impact.
