I was delighted to find these hellbores (helleborus) getting ready to bloom.

Often referred to as winter roses or lenten roses, they are in fact not closely related to the rose family. No matter what they are called however, it’s wonderful to see them.
Happy Sunday.
They are lovely flowers.

They are and often the first flowers to arrive. I found these in a nice protected spot. 😊 Cheers.

These are truly beautiful, Lynette; and the way you captured them through photography is marvelous! The fact that they are almost about to bloom reflects such promise of blossoming life ahead. If you happen to be around them at the time that they actually burst into bloom, would so enjoy seeing the photographs. Please spoil us with a follow up post if possible. This is lovely. Would wish to see the natural promise that these flowers hold being fulfilled. Thank you once again for making our day! Happy Sunday to you too!!

Thank you very much for your lovely comments, Talkmore and you’re welcome. I walk by that location regularly and will be keeping an eye out for their blooming period as I would like to catch them in progress. I’ll definitely post the pictures. They are so pretty. Cheers.

I googled what they would look like since we don’t have hellbores where I am. They’re pretty!

They are very early blooming and quite long-lasting, too. It’s so nice to see them and yes, they’re very pretty. 😊 Cheers.

I don’t think I’ve ever had hellebores in my garden, so I looked them up too. Pretty flowers, but there was something about them not liking dampness, so maybe they wouldn’t do well here. I’ll just have to enjoy yours.

We’ve been rather damp for months (although probably not as much as you) so I’m not sure if this variety is bothered by that! They are very early and long lasting bloomers and it’s so nice to see them. An excellent sign of spring! Cheers.

Nice! We still have snow and more in the forecast but the longer days are a good sign that it will be spring soon.

Many parts of North America are really getting walloped by snow and storms this winter! But yes, the longer days are so great. 😊 Cheers.

That’s a good sign Lynette. Nice to see spring slowly getting closer. Happy Sunday. Allan

Thanks, Allan. Yes, definitely a good sign but I’m also beginning to think of the other side of the coin and hoping that we don’t land in a scorcher of a spring that leads to forest fires. We have had lots of rain though so I hope we’re at least somewhat protected. Cheers.

I love hellebores. They are beautiful and long lasting. I have three, all currently buried in a foot of snow. Happy Sunday

Thanks, Jenn. They are really very pretty. Sorry to hear about all that snow. Eastern and central Canada definitely deserve an early spring!

That’s a great surprise in February. I had to look up the flower because I don’t know the name. You’ll have to share when they bloom. Maggie

How interesting, my reaction is the opposite of the one below: I am fascinated abythe shape, and the perfection, of these still-furled buds. Maybe we have to think of each stage as its own reality, its own stand-alone, rather than a way-station toward something else.

I agree, Penny. I like the shape of the buds and how they are off-set by the very green leaves. Yes, this stage is its own standalone, not a way-station. Well said.

Just so you know, we’re unfortunately getting mega-rain (with snow in the mountains and driving warnings for the passes) and apparently even Vancouver had some wet snow (didn’t last long, but there you are). Supposed to be better by Saturday, though. I think I remember you mentioning this before but I can’t remember if you’re going to Vancouver or Victoria?

Silver Star to go skiing so bring on the snow! When we lived in North Van watching people drive in snow was hilarious or scary!!

What a lovely surprise. Spring seems a long way away in southern Ontario. I just did a quick google image search of what these flowers look like in bloom as I didn’t recognize the name. They look very pretty.

It was. They are usually the first bloomers here and can be very early in Victoria. They are very pretty and quite long-lasting, too. We are finally getting our first snowfall today. It’s very wet and melting as it reaches the ground but we are totally socked in; I can only see for about 6-7 metres. Winter is taking another kick at the can!
