An Autumn Storm

A couple of days ago we had a major storm blow through. The wind was roaring and savagely bending the trees almost to the ground while the rain whipped furiously against windows and scudded down streets. But a few hours later, voilà! Sun and lovely clear air!

The wind had disappeared, the sun had come out and except for the dampness still in the air and the puddles on the ground, it was almost as if the storm hadn’t ever happened.

The sun even had a bit of power; it actually felt more spring-like than autumnal.

Okanagan Lake was strikingly beautiful in its calm and tranquil demeanour; there was no sign at all of the recent weather tantrum.

The wind did leave a reminder of its power, though. Heaps of leaves were left piled about in an explosion of colourful autumn detritus as if to say, “I’m gone for now but I’ll soon be back!”

Happy Sunday.

    1. Thank you very much, Thomas. It was so extremely clear after the storm had passed. I’m hoping for another clear period like that since we had yet another storm today. Very windy and rainy. I hope you manage to retain your decorations!

  1. Dear Lynette
Although we live on the other side of the great waters, we had the same weather a couple of days ago. Now the sea is calm again, the sun is shining, and we’ll do the last work in the garden the last work before winter in our garden.
    Keep well

    1. Hello Fab Four, we’ve just had more of the same. Lots of wind and rain that’s coming down as snow in the mountains. It seems that winter might arrive early. Yes, we have to get our outside winter prep completed as well. Cheers.

  2. Autumn can be so dramatic, colourful, windy, rainy, sunny, warm, cool, but never boring. Glad you are getting some rain. Nothing is making it over the mountains to our area, well, except for the wind. Happy Sunday Lynette. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. Agreed; autumn can be a very mixed plate but M and I think it’s the worst autumn weather we’ve seen here, though. We’re presently experiencing another system; lots of high wind and rain that’s coming down as snow in the passes. Terrible driving conditions, apparently. So sorry to hear that none of this reaching you. I would ship some if I could!

    1. It was so gorgeous, Jenn. We’re back in the middle of another storm again, though. Lots of wind and rain here in the valley that’s falling as snow in the mountains. Winter’s arriving early, it seems!

  3. It must have been a widespread system. We had it here too. A lot of leaves are down, but more to go yet. I guess that’s why they’re called “leaves,” because in the fall, they leaves. 😉

    1. Hahaha. Good one. 😊 Yes, we have many, many more leaves, most of them still green, actually. Apparently this system came from the Pacific and is blanketing the entire southern half of the province with lots of wind and rain. It really feels like we might get an early winter.

      1. We had our first snow on the hilltops overnight last night. After the wind and rain yesterday we got a reprieve today of beautiful sunshine, but there is much more of the wind and rain to come in the next weeks.

        1. Wow! We don’t have any snow in the mountains around us yet but apparently the passes are getting lots. I saw that in some areas the snow level is at 1200 m so we’re probably not too far behind. Nice that you’re getting some sun!

    1. Many leaves came down but most of them are still green and attached. The white ash trees turn early and it was mostly their leaves that were blown off. It looks like we might be getting an early winter though regardless of the leaves!

  4. I think the best of fall has that edge to it — fresh invigorating air, sparkling light, gusty breezes. (Well, all that when it isn’t pitching down rain on our heads…)

    1. I completely agree, Penny, and yes, except for the drizzles (no grizzles!) falling on our heads. Unfortunately we’re in the middle of yet another storm where I wondered if Alberta would be finding our trees strewn all over the prairies around Lethbridge and although the wind finally settled this afternoon the overcast then descended almost to the valley floor! So, definitely no invigorating crispness thus far. It’s more like floppy dampness but that’s if it hasn’t blown into Saskatchewan. As you can probably tell, our autumn weather really hasn’t been all that great. We went from 35+ in September to October’s massive wind storms, some with rain, some without. Ugh.

  5. Love the colours of the leaf shot! Would make a stellar puzzle. We also had a kick ass storm but ours came with rain and snow (which took 4 days to melt!)

    1. Thank you, Bernie. I didn’t think k of that but yes, it definitely would make a good puzzle. Four days to melt? Ugh. It sounds like you had something blizzard-like! At least we didn’t get snow and actually, our temperatures have been in the mid-teens, so no danger of it, and that includes the latest storm of the last two days. So much wind – really violent – with lots more rain. Up in the mountains there has apparently been lots of snow already. I think we might be headed for an early winter. 😑

    1. Thank you very much, Linda. They did for a while but the clouds – and the wind and rain – came back again over the weekend. Yes, it was amazing how it was stormy one minute and started to clear so beautifully the next!
