A Hike in the Woods …

… in Waterton Lakes National Park …

… through sunny trees …

… and comfortably warm temperatures …

… was a marvellous autumnal experience but we did have watch for bears!

Happy Sunday.

    1. It’s so gorgeous, isn’t it? It’s definitely also less busy and less well-known although we were surprised at how many people were about on our recent visit. It’s such a beautiful park and I’m happy that it’s more out of the way. 😊 Cheers.

        1. Haha! 😊 Yes, I’ve heard that before. We’ve never had to use anything but a friend used an air horn against a bear a couple of years back. Apparently the bear took off like a shot. Their hearing is much more sensitive than ours and I find air horns awful, so for a bear they must really hurt. As a result of his experience I always carry the air horn in my hand!

    1. Thank you very much, Thomas. We are quite experienced where bears are concerned – they’re in large numbers everywhere in the north where we lived for six years – and always take precautions such as having pepper spray and an air horn along. We don’t like to tempt fate (or bears)!

      1. Good to be safe, Lynette! As a young man, I tented in wooded places in BC and the Yukon. Coming from a bearless NZ I was quite worried about them perhaps coming around my campsite. Wonderful to get to see some bears at a distance though!

        1. You were right to be concerned about them in your campsites as they will stop by for a visit if they smell food! You must have had a fabulous time of it camping all over B.C. and Yukon. When we lived in NWT we saw them regularly – black bears, usually – but from a distance or from our truck. Always best that way!

          1. Fond memories, body intact! Great advice about staying in the truck- in my ignorance I got out of the van I was in, to photograph a black bear cub by the roadside out in the country. Then the mother appeared out of nearby bushes…I have never run so fast! Never got that photo 😜

          2. Oh Andy – wow! Yes, that was definitely taking a huge risk. Mother bears are extremely protective of their offspring! Glad you got away unscathed. I bet you moved faster than you ever thought possible!

          3. I’m not surprised as even our very urban areas can have shockingly rural characteristics! I’ve seen bears here in town and the public parks in Toronto are presently experiencing issues with wolf/coyote hybrid animals (wolves and coyotes will mate).

  1. Sorry Lynette. Not sure how I missed this one. You are right, there are many lovely hikes in Waterton. The bears like them too and you always have to be an guard, make noise and carry at least one can of naivety (bear spray). Thanks for sharing. Allan

    1. No worries, Allan. I occasionally miss a post also. We very much enjoyed our visit and also had really great weather, too. We did see bears on one of the trails but they were far off and we decided not to go that way! Yes, we always have the pepper spray along although we should really be better about carrying it in hand. Cheers.

    1. It was really a wonderful visit, Linda. I think we chose a good time of year. Yes, the fire missed entire stands of trees in various areas, but it’s clear that it was huge. The trees are now vigorously growing back; good to see.
