August Retrospective

August is usually very hot at its start and becomes cooler towards its end. Not so this year, here at least. Our opening temperatures were somewhat lower than usual but as the month progressed, we became consistently hotter, especially over the last couple of weeks. Nevertheless, as summer winds down – it officially ends on September 22, just over three weeks from now – here’s a look back.

August 2’s lovely rain-pink hydrangea.
August 4’s gingko biloba …
… and frolicking fish.
The Snowbirds, the Canadian military’s aerobatic demonstration team …
… put on a terrific show …
… while later summer flowers – like anemones – began to put on their own show …
… including sunflowers …
… and mountain hydrangeas.
Wine grapes began to hit their stride …
… as the days became hotter and hotter …
… somnolent and slow.

We’re still in slo-mo as it remains very hot, so our summer may linger past its official end date.

Happy Sunday.

  1. Your photos paint a beautiful picture of August Lynette. Still hot and dry here too. One cooler day next week and right back into it. Harvesting is in full swing and early. Happy Sunday. Allan

    1. Thank you very much, Allan. We had a bit of a reprieve last week but then right back up. We’re predicted to have mid-30s all next week. I‘m definitely looking forward to some cooling. Yes, everyone must be busy with the harvest. The ones with time on their hands are making book lists. 😉

      1. Low 30s are great, especially in Calgary where it tends to cool off more at night, but I’m honestly looking forward to some cooler temperatures. We’re supposed to get mid-30s all next week. But give me time and I’ll complain about needing some heat. 😉

    1. Thank you very much, John. I’ve actually had enough of the 35°+ temperatures (around 95-100 F) and would like some cooler days but that’s not in the cards as we’re looking at a lot of heat for at least the next week. Our winters in this region are very mild; snow is a rarity (we get rain instead) so it’s not all that bad, really. Cheers.

  2. Love the photo album! The summer in general has started off so cool here in our area. It has been heating up, but patterns from previous years are broken, for sure.

  3. Beautiful display of summer pictures. It’s funny because I always refer to the end of summer as the end of August, but you’re right, technically we still have another three weeks of it. Hope you get some relief from the heat soon.

    1. Thank you very much, Linda. I used to think that way, too, largely because of school start, I believe. We’re still baking under 35ish daytime temperatures with lows of around 17 so it definitely doesn’t feel like autumn at all! We’re supposed to drop into the 20s next week but we’ll see. I’ve heard these promises before! Cheers.
