Yesterday in Canada most people had a day off. As I went for a morning ramble it was great to see the parks and beaches crowded as so many enjoyed the day by soaking up the sun, swimming, boating or picnicking.

Fly fishing.

Other people took the opportunity to get in some fly fishing. Okanagan Lake is known for its huge rainbow trout; apparently some can reach rather impressive weights.

The only drawback was that we had smoke-carrying wind moving into the valley as you can see from the pictures.

Most of the forest fires generating this smoke are in the north; I fervently hope that those parts of this country soon get some substantial and sustained rain. They certainly could do with it.

    1. Yes, Calgary is rain, rain, rain. A friend recently moved there (one of the reasons was for the sun!) and he’s been wondering where it has disappeared! The smoke is mainly coming from fires in the north, especially northern Manitoba, but that it’s August, they’re popping in many places.

  6. A lovely heritage day summary (summery) Lynette. Love the Gingko leaves in the photo. Despite the promise of huge quantities of rain here over the weekend, we got three drops. We spent part of our day visiting the Royal Alberta Museum with our kids and grandchild. It was the first time we visited since it moved and opened in 2018. Happy Tuesday. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. Yes, a summery summary. 😊We had a lot of rain on Friday and all Friday night too, and we’ve had numerous thunderstorm warnings since then but no precipitation. Given the heat we’ve had everything has dried out pretty quickly, but fingers crossed there’s enough soil moisture and the forest management efforts have been sufficient to offset any local fires. I wish you some good rain, Allan.

  7. Wild fires are so frequent these days. I know climate change is partly to blame, higher temperatures etc. but you have to wonder if forests etc are managed as well as they should be. So many of these types of jobs have been cut.

    1. Part of the problem in this country is that it’s impossible to manage most of the forests because of their sheer sizes. Nevertheless, forest management near occupied areas is critically important and I was happy to see that a recent nearby fire was quickly brought under control in part because of good management practices. Agreed, these jobs need to definitely be brought back.

    1. Thank you very much, Belinda. 😊 Wow! A yellow cast is pretty bad. That’s when you definitely need to start wearing a mask. The smoke here isn’t that severe; I haven’t even been able to smell it; we only can see the haze. Glad to hear that you’re having a clear day.

    1. It has been really terrible. Arson hasn’t been an issue; only one forest fire this summer has been attributed to that. It’s really the combination of dry conditions, high temperatures and lightning – it’s the perfect recipe, unfortunately.

      1. Oh, that’s so good to hear. We only had a sprinkle of rain and I mean sprinkle! But it’s better than wind and heat. I hope this heat wave thing is finished after one more bout of it (that we know is coming).

  11. Beautiful photos, Lynnette, I hope you do get that rain. We need rain too, the Gifford fire in California is smothering Las Vegas in smoke.

    1. Thank you very much, John. 😊 We’re okay locally, but there are a huge number of fires all over the country, especially in the north. I hope they get the rain they need and that California does, too.

    1. It really was great to see everyone enjoying the day off. Yes, you haven’t had much rain at all. We were beginning to get dry here again (that can happen quickly since we’re semi-arid desert) and even had a fire start in nearby Peachland but we were lucky enough to get a couple of soaks. I hope you get rain soon and especially all the forest fire areas. It has really been awful this year.
