During our recent trip through northern British Columbia, Yukon and on to Jasper National Park we saw lots of animals, but they visually weren’t at their best. They have just come through winter, they’re in the process of shedding their coats, and they either have young ones or are about to. In short, they are busy parents just trying to recover from winter cold!

Being able to see all these animals was particularly wonderful especially as most of our sightings were in a national park where they are well protected.
Happy Sunday.
Nice post

It’s amazing how much wildlife you saw on the drive. Those bison calves are adorable. And I can’t believe you saw a moose! I’m very jealous. We were hoping to see one while we were in the Yukon, but had no such luck.

Yes, we did see a lot of animals. We noticed the moose just outside of Liard Hot Springs. It was quite a distance away and I only had my cell camera so the photo quality isn’t great. We were just able to see the calf but weren’t able to get a picture, though. Oh yes the little bison calves were so adorable all cuddled together!

Always great to see wildlife and you have a great collection, Lynette. We were a bit disappointed during our recent Jasper visit, but it is ungulate baby season and not all of them are out and about yet. I imagine we will see a few new bison calves on our next trip to Elk Island. Have a wonderful Sunday. Allan

Thank you very much, Allan. We saw quite a few shedding caribou, mountain goats and deer, too, but mostly from quite a distance. Agreed, it’s baby season and that’s changing the parents’ behaviour. I hope you’re able to post some bison calf pictures! Cheers.

Wonderful! And so many babies! Is that a goat though and not a sheep? It’s difficult to tell with their spring coat, but the face and brownish coat looks like a sheep.

I initially thought it might be a sheep also but in checking against online photos this picture is definitely of a goat. Yes, lots of babies everywhere! It was lovely to see them but I also didn’t want to upset the parents so we kept our distance. Cheers.

Anneli (below) asked the same question. 😊 After checking on the internet I’m now wondering if it’s hybrid. 😉 Cheers.

I wonder, because it does look like it could be either…or both!

I dug around on the internet looking up mountain sheep and mountain goats specifically for Jasper and have now found that some pictures showing the same animals are identified as both mountain sheep and mountain goats! So now I have no idea what animal this is. 🤷♀️

Except for the bear, I haven’t seen these animals myself. So I really enjoyed them! The bison calves is an excellent photo amongst many, Lynette 😊

Thank you very much, Belinda. 😊 I think the bison calves picture is probably the best one of the lot. For that one and the bear I was ready with the camera and didn’t have to fuss around at all. Glad you’re seeing some animals that you hadn’t before! Cheers.

Always nice! After I sent my original comment I remember a sighting of a female moose a number of years ago. We were driving in Maine along a windy road and the cars ahead of us slowed down to a crawl . A very large moose decided to cross the road 😏

Wow! Of course that’s how they sometimes get hit, unfortunately. I don’t think I’ve seen a moose near a road for many years now.

Lots of mottled fur, which is my dog’s condition, as he sheds his winter coat.

Yes, except for the calves and maybe the bear, they were all really shedding. We passed places on the trails where animals had been rubbing themselves against tree branches. I think they probably get pretty itchy when the shed starts!

What luck! My favorite is the bear, who really does look groggy. Hope that bear gets a good nap. 🙂

This is a northern bear, so we suspected that he hadn’t been awake from his hibernation for very long. He looked like he needed a strong coffee! 😉 Cheers.

I’m wondering if that “mountain goat” might be an immature bighorn sheep, probably a ewe, judging by the smallish horns? Possible?

That’s funny. 😊 Maggie (above) asked a similar question and I thought so at first, too, but after I compared my photo to internet file photos from Jasper, this is supposed to be a goat. Maybe it’s a hybrid. 😉

Thank you very much, Barbara and you’re welcome. 😊 The national parks are probably the safest areas for wildlife especially the very large ones like Jasper. Cheers.

Yes very much so. We had seen several but I wasn’t able to get a good photo. This one was still very sleepy and let me get a decent capture. 😊
