Northern Mountains

During our trip through northern British Columbia and into Yukon we have seen some beautiful mountains and mountain ranges.

This is part of the Coast/Central Mountain range that bisects British Columbia. We paralleled or drove around much of this range while en route to Yukon on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. I love the pea green, new deciduous growth that we saw everywhere. Spring is definitely later in the north.

We experienced quite a few showers interspersed with sunny periods, but saw that a lot of snow was still falling at the higher elevations.

Neither M nor I had ever driven this route – the Stewart-Cassiar Highway (highway 37) – before and found it spectacularly beautiful. The Coast/Central Mountains aren’t as tall or rugged as the Rocky Mountains but still breathtaking. It’s well worth the drive and if you’re inclined, there are lots of opportunities for camping, hiking and fishing.

Highway 37 goes north from the junction with highway 16 just west of Prince George and Hazelton and is a total of 725 km (450 miles).

Below shows the highway’s terminus at the Yukon boundary.

This highway is very remote and there’s no cell service (except emergency), but we found that quite attractive. If you’re interested in this trip, here’s a website that might be helpful.

    1. I’m glad you’re enjoying these posts, Belinda. We hadn’t explored this part of BC before. It was such a surprise to find out how gorgeous it is and yes, definitely remote. Not many communities in this area; there are a few very small ones.

  1. Very little tops the views of mountains surrounded by the green of spring, while still capped in white. You are travelling through a beautiful part of Canada Lynette, hopefully, before the mosquitoes and blackflies appear. Happy Monday. Allan

    1. Thank you, Allan. I agree. It is truly a spectacular part of the country. The colours are fabulous. The combination of pea green new leaves, white snow capped mountains and deep green conifers is beautiful. We are in the sweet spot between the start of good weather and the arrival of all the flies so it’s lovely. We’ve seen a few but nothing much yet.

    1. That shorter season is immediately visible almost by every kilometre. When we arrived at our friend’s place in Yukon, many trees still just had buds; there had been lots of snow there only two weeks ago. Yes, this trip has been very enjoyable. Cheers.

    1. Thank you very much, Tricia. 😊 If you decide to at some point take a northern road trip and absolutely spectacular drive this one and the Alcan (Alaska) highway back south are truly jaw-dropping. Cheers.

  2. That picture of the leaves and snow-covered mountains is stellar. It’s worthy of a wall. It’s not an area I’ve been to as we chose to fly to the Yukon.
