We saw this very healthy-looking but groggy guy while stopping for a break on the Cassiar Highway.

We were careful and stayed in our vehicle but we did enjoy observing him. This yearling was eating a plant that he seemed to like a lot but also appeared to be very sleepy. This far north (60° north latitude) the bears haven’t been awake from their winter slumber for very long.
Happy Sunday.
What a capture! 👌

And I hear they are hungry when they first wake up.

Yes, that’s my understanding, too. We didn’t get out of the vehicle; just briefly admired him and then left.

The best bear views are from a distance or inside a car. We saw very little wildlife in Jasper this spring, a few deer in the resort and some mountain goats and sheep on our way out. No elk or bears. Happy Sunday Lynette. Allan

Thank you very much, Allan. Definitely! We have been lots of bears and a couple of moose on this trip. It’s sad to hear that the wildlife numbers seem to be down in Jasper but given what happened not surprising.

I saw one bear in Yellowstone, a black bear, too, I think. They are noble creatures.

They really are something. Very intelligent and resourceful but also unpredictable. They have to be respected.

What a wonderful bear photo! Lucky to see from the safety of your car 😊

Thank you very much, Belinda. 😊 It was great to be able to see one so close. He completely ignored us and continued eating. He was probably thinking, “Yikes. More tourists. So many of them and they don’t taste all that good, either.” 😉

they look so different than the bears on Vancouver island!

Yes, they do, don’t they? I think they may have developed a few differences for this environment. Cheers, Wayne.

there are 16 sub species of black bear in BC and they haven’t yet designated the Vancouver Island bear as a unique sub species yet for some strange reason?
Bears and all animals DNA expression is affected by the environment.
Our bears have black snouts, while the mainland have a light brownish colour.

Thank you very much, Wayne. I didn’t realise that there are so many BC subspecies. Strange that the Vancouver Island bears haven’t been designated yet! I know that Haida Gwaii has a unique and rare subspecies of black bear as well. Here’s an interesting piece about them: https://qcsafaris.com/2022/03/25/haida-gwaiis-rare-bear-species/

I found everything the Haida Gwaii bears do the Vancouver island bears do exactly the same.
I thought it was funny that the photographers name was “Gurr”!

Gurr! Isn’t that great?! If their behaviour is the same, I’m surprised that they have been designated as a subspecies but I guess the physical differences are considered to be more important.

Several years ago M and I were shadowed by a bear while out hiking. We got going back to our vehicle as fast we could!

We actually learned a lot about bears when we lived in Golden. They have a resident Grizzly and are happy to teach everyone about bears. Grizzlies actually wake up with something similar to a hang over. They’re brain is fogu and they can’t eat much for the first few days. I imagine black bears are the same. This one looks very groggy.

Thanks, Maggie. We have now seen many black bears on this trip and they all look groggy and completely not with it. I agree; this one – and all of the bears we have seen – look hung over. Best to stay well away from them and admire from afar.

Seeing a bear from inside the car is my ideal bear encounter. He does look groggy and his fur is a bit scruffy.

I definitely wouldn’t want to come face-to-face with one! Yes, definitely looking groggy. I think a few good meals and a couple of lake swims will get him all spiffed up and feeling better.

Better to be the watcher in this case 😊

For sure! While hiking one time we were sure we were being stalked by a bear; we got back to the vehicle in record time. Flew back, almost!

Thank you, Tricia. Yes, it was quite amazing! I have a good collection of bear photos from my time living in NWT but I like this one a lot. We were able to just quietly observe him without concern.

Definitely healthy looking. The two we saw up there last year were very scruffy and skinny compared to him.

We have seen many black bears on this trip, including cubs and yearlings, and they all seem healthy. Maybe the ones you saw were affected by last year’s forest fires?
