The white rhododendrons in one of the city gardens have started to bloom.

Rhododendrons come in many lovely shades but I don’t often see the white ones.

To me, they feel very springy indeed. Fresh and light and tempered by the merest hint of very pale pink, they seem to epitomise the new growing season.

They almost glow in the sun.
Happy rhododendron Saturday.
White rhododendrons are indeed beautiful flowers too

There are many, many spring blooms right now but these white rhododendrons do stand out.

I love the colourful rhodies, but there is just something about the white blossoms that catches the eye. Happy Saturday Lynette. Allan

Thanks, Allan. I agree. The white blossoms stand out so well, especially against all the fresh green foliage right now. The snowball hydrangeas have also started and then white dogwoods are at their height, too, so there is this amazing white and green palette happening. Cheers.

I don’t think I’ve seen a white one. It’s elegantly beautiful. Maggie

Except for this local garden, I’ve only ever seen them in Victoria (that I’ve noted). It could be that white isn’t everyone’s first choice. After coming out of a monotone winter, people want to see colour, but I agree, they’re very elegantly beautiful.

I was in rhodie and azalea heaven last weekend. Must get writing a post about them.

It’s really marvellous to see them in their glorious abundance. Yes, a rhodie and azalea post would be wonderful.

I don’t see them much either, just in this garden and I’ve also seen them in Victoria. They definitely are stand-outs!

WordPress has stopped sending me notifications of your new posts. I can’t find anything wrong in my settings. 😦

No worries. That has happened to me before, too. Sometimes the posts of people I’ve been following for years will suddenly stop showing in my reader, as well. So strange, but I’ve noticed lots of other quirky things on WP from time to time, especially when they’re changing things around.

Stunning. We’ve planted three rhododendrons in our backyard in the past few years, including one that’s white. It’s quite small though and it looks like it won’t bloom this year. I worry it might not be getting enough light.

Hi Linda, here’s what I know about rhodies from my mom who was a stellar gardener and planted some at my first house (and last I knew, they were doing incredibly well 30 years later): the young ones will only start to bloom after about 4-5 years; they don’t like direct sunshine, dappled or partially shaded is best; they dislike windy locations; deep watering about once a month is preferred over shallow, daily watering. They are very long-lived, well over 100 years. I hope that helps. Cheers. 😊

That does help. It’s quite young and I think we’ve been watering it incorrectly! Thanks for passing that info along.
