Sun Showers

Sun showers are an interesting weather phenomenon. In one spot, thick heavy clouds may be dropping significant rain while a few metres away, it’s sunny.

This was the case recently when I went for my daily ramble. There were some dark clouds producing a misty rain and a bit of a rainbow …

… while on the other side of the lake, the sun shone beautifully.

The contrast of sun and dark cloud probably shows better in this photo.

The sun was shining on these azaleas but you can see the dark cloud behind them. Eventually the weather cleared completely and I finished my ramble without need for an umbrella.

Happy Monday.

      1. I can never sleep on an aircraft, Lynette, too noisy. The jet lag yesterday was so bad and it will hang on for another day or three. Uhg!

    1. Yes, I like that scene too and have posted quite a few photos taken from that vantage point. It’s definitely wetter here than usual but no one is complaining since during the previous three years we had a major drought. The past autumn and winter brought lots of rain – snow at the upper elevations – so the ski operators were happy as well as the wine producers and orchardists. It’s so great to see how green everything is this year. I understand that UK has been drier and warmer than usual.

  1. Spring is unpredictable. A couple of showers here yesterday too Lynette, but otherwise sunny and windy. The azalea blooms are amazing right now. Happy Monday. Allan

    1. Thank you, Allan. Yes, it sure is. We had intermittent heavy wind gusts accompanying those very dark, patchy clouds which were blowing in from the west; quite unusual for us. This valley has a north-south orientation between two mountain ranges, so a westerly wind along with the sun showers seems appropriate! Yes, the azaleas are fantastic right now. So beautiful!

    1. That’s so true and has worked particularly well this year as everything is becoming so beautifully verdant. Much healthier than last year with its dry conditions and how badly the orchards and wineries had been affected by that cold snap in January 2024. Cheers.

        1. Quite a few went under, unfortunately, but the government has insisted that all remaining wineries and orchards take protective measures such as underground warm water piping, geotextiles (a specialised white cloth that covers the trees or grape vines) or LED lights that provide warmth. Apparently the government made a lot of grant money available for these fixes. Most of the older or more established wineries survived, though.
