In spite of varied weather, we have been holding our temperatures over the last while and according to the environmental prognosticators, we are supposed to be in the 20s C (70s F) next week. Could be more whiplash weather so we will have to see!
In any case, the local marmots are out in full force and are looking awake and full of beans …

… a very good sign of more stable weather, at least as far as temperatures are concerned.

I spotted some opening buds …

… that really made my day …

and felt an overall sense of spring’s arrival. Lovely.
Happy Friday.
Do the marmots hibernate in winter, Lynette?

Yes, they hibernate for roughly five months. I saw a single marmot in February but he looked like he was ready to go back to sleep and he did for another three weeks!

In our current world, that could be very tempting. Happy Friday, Lynette!

Thank you very much. 😊 They are funny little guys but they’re fun to watch. In about three months we’ll start seeing some little ones.

I like the marmot predictor of spring better than the groundhog, it’s very cute. Maggie

The marmot is cute. Our weather is all over the place now too. I like the randomness, seems refreshing after a gray February.

March is never very predictable but when we can run through all four seasons in about six hours we’re setting new records! Agreed – randomness is better than wall-to-wall grey.

Your marmots are looking for spring just like we are. Soon they’ll be finding it.

Maple buds? Looks lovely. I know nothing about marmots. Are they friendly creatures?

Yes, maple buds, and they are growing quickly. I’m very much looking forward to having leaves again.
The marmots are native to mountainous parts of Canada and distantly related to squirrels (marmots aren’t groundhogs or ground squirrels though). This particular colony left the mountains and decided to live in the breakwater boulders at the water’s edge in a designated park area. They are very cautious but lovely little animals, very affectionate and chatty with each other. They tolerate humans as long as we don’t get too close. I sometimes like to sit quietly and watch them interact.

Thank you for the information about the marmots. They sound a bit like the African Dassies – Rock Hyrax.

You’re welcome. Yes, they do seem a bit like the rock hyrax, including that marmots also use sentries. Cheers.

The opening buds are beautiful, especially next to such bright blue skies. And those marmots are very adorable. Enjoy the spring like weather and have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you very much, Linda. Those buds are so great to see. I’m looking forward to trees with leaves! About mid-June we’ll see the baby marmots, too. So cute!

Whiplash weather – I like that expression. Lovely to see the marmots. I still haven’t seen their European cousins (or indeed the European ground squirrel). Quest for this summer, maybe.

March is usually very unpredictable but this year it has been incredible, so “whiplash” is a good word for it! This colony of marmots are basically community pets, to some degree. Everyone loves seeing them.
