The pond that the ducks have been inhabiting all winter is shrinking and shrinking.

If it wasn’t for the fountain, it would be completely closed and the ducks would be hunting for a place to swim and forage as there’s now a lot of ice around the lake edges.

But there’s relief coming since if all goes as predicted, we are supposed to be climbing well above freezing over the next few days. It won’t be long now, duckies!
Happy Saturday.
Duck exodus avoided, hopefully!

They’re definitely not going anywhere. These are part of our huge resident flock who are more like pets than wild birds, but for this little group, their space was sure shrinking! And in any case, we’re warming up now. 😊

Its right about now when the doubting ducks are thinking, I should have flown South. Happy Maple Leaf flag day Lynette. Allan

Happy Flag Day! We have ours up. They may be thinking that but unfortunately, I don’t think these ducks would know how to get there. 😉 They apparently haven’t flown south in years and are now quite dependent in the winter.

Aw, poor ducks! I hope it does warm up soon for them! ❤️

It already has fortunately. Sunny and above freezing today. Cheers.

They are hardy little things aren’t they?! Maggie

Mallard ducks really are. They survived our 4-day -25 (that temperature broke records here and killed a lot of vines and almost all the tree fruits) cold snap in January, 2024 by huddling in a tightly knotted cluster. There must have been 200 of them constantly moving in this bunch. The city brought them grain otherwise I don’t think they would have made it.

Wow that’s cold, poor things.

I’m glad we didn’t have that this year!

Doesn’t look like there’s a lot of food for them there, but their options seem to be limited just now. Hope it warms up soon.

Thanks, Anneli. We are already above freezing today and things should continue to improve a lot for them as we’re supposed to be +5 in the next few. Cheers.

Same here. But why is it still so cold?!!!!

Wind? That could do it!

Yes, it’s windy. And cold. But the snow is melting in the combination of wind and rain.

February can be such an iffy month. It never knows what it wants to do with itself.

Right! When I walked along frozen Lost Lagoon the other day, there wasn’t a duck in sight anywhere. Now that it’s raining, they’ll surely be back.

We’re sunny and above freezing too so duck conditions will rapidly improve. They basically are city pets and I doubt they would even know how to fly south!

Poor little duckies; luckily it will thaw soon!

It already has and they are doing much better. 😊 Cheers.

Aw, this is so beautiful. I love the duckies. At least there is a small space to swim with. Thanks for sharing, Lynette

We are above freezing now so their little swimming spot has definitely expanded. They’re doing better. Cheers.

Oh thank God. I’m excited for the next season there to see the big swimming spot where ducks will enjoy .

They have quite a few spots because this city is sandwiched between two lakes and there are also lots of creeks and small ponds about too, but I often post lots of pictures of them. 😊 Cheers.

Oh, so lovely. I would love to see them all soon. Your city sounds gorgeous. That’s amazing, Lynette.

It’s a very pretty city situated between two lakes with mountains on both sides. There are lots of birds to see from bald eagles to hummers. I often post pictures of them. Cheers.

We have a small nature park in the area where they heat the pond for the ducks. Enjoy the warm up. Our temps are going down, down, down. 😕

It’s nice that they do that. Here the city puts out feed for them. We are sunny and above freezing now; feels a lot better. You must be getting some of that huge low system that’s walloping the entire Great Lakes area. Stay warm!

That’s right – keep hanging on duckies!

They were doing better today because we have warmed up quite a bit. These duckies know how to hang on because I think they may not know how to fly south. 😉

Is this pretty unusual for your area, Lynette? Well, at least some relief is in sight 😊

Hi Belinda, yes, it is, but this year it’s actually much better than it has been the last two Januarys. January, 2024 was very, very bad with a -25 cold snap that lasted four days and almost completely decimated the wine and tree fruits industries. Apparently the vintners and orchardists are saying that all is okay this winter since we didn’t get below -12 (at night), but even that is very unusual for the Okanagan. Climate change. What fun. 🙄

It’s good news to hear that the growing season will be ok!
We’re getting another 20-30 cms of snow today, ugh!

Yes, it’s definitely a relief that the growing season won’t get walloped again. I read that you’re getting more snow this week than you did all of last winter! Wow! We got some snow overnight but the temperature is going up to +2 this afternoon so the melting will start soon again. It’s unpredictable February, isn’t it?

Oh good, glad to hear that warmer weather is on the way! I’m not looking forward to all our snow melting, which will create a giant slushy mess everywhere.

Yes, you are going to have lots of slushy, messy water everywhere. It will be time for the rubber boots! But then again, you’re heading to NZ fairly soon I believe?

Yup! We’ll be leaving in about five weeks! And by the time we’re back, all the snow should be melted. Hopefully.
