Duck Shrinkage

The pond that the ducks have been inhabiting all winter is shrinking and shrinking.

If it wasn’t for the fountain, it would be completely closed and the ducks would be hunting for a place to swim and forage as there’s now a lot of ice around the lake edges.

But there’s relief coming since if all goes as predicted, we are supposed to be climbing well above freezing over the next few days. It won’t be long now, duckies!

Happy Saturday.

    1. They’re definitely not going anywhere. These are part of our huge resident flock who are more like pets than wild birds, but for this little group, their space was sure shrinking! And in any case, we’re warming up now. 😊

    1. Happy Flag Day! We have ours up. They may be thinking that but unfortunately, I don’t think these ducks would know how to get there. 😉 They apparently haven’t flown south in years and are now quite dependent in the winter.

    1. Mallard ducks really are. They survived our 4-day -25 (that temperature broke records here and killed a lot of vines and almost all the tree fruits) cold snap in January, 2024 by huddling in a tightly knotted cluster. There must have been 200 of them constantly moving in this bunch. The city brought them grain otherwise I don’t think they would have made it.

  1. We have a small nature park in the area where they heat the pond for the ducks. Enjoy the warm up. Our temps are going down, down, down. 😕

    1. It’s nice that they do that. Here the city puts out feed for them. We are sunny and above freezing now; feels a lot better. You must be getting some of that huge low system that’s walloping the entire Great Lakes area. Stay warm!

    1. Hi Belinda, yes, it is, but this year it’s actually much better than it has been the last two Januarys. January, 2024 was very, very bad with a -25 cold snap that lasted four days and almost completely decimated the wine and tree fruits industries. Apparently the vintners and orchardists are saying that all is okay this winter since we didn’t get below -12 (at night), but even that is very unusual for the Okanagan. Climate change. What fun. 🙄

        1. Yes, it’s definitely a relief that the growing season won’t get walloped again. I read that you’re getting more snow this week than you did all of last winter! Wow! We got some snow overnight but the temperature is going up to +2 this afternoon so the melting will start soon again. It’s unpredictable February, isn’t it?
