We are supposed to be getting clear skies but cold temperatures over the next couple of days, the result of a so-called “polar vortex” (really? do we need to add drama to the weather? as we know, the weather is quite capable of providing its own drama without the ridiculous names). Nevertheless, and with all due respect to Shakespeare, something frigid this way comes. I saw it arriving yesterday afternoon.

The heavy valley cloud was being forced out by a very brisk, cold wind blowing out of the north that was also causing whitecaps on the lake. Brrr.

Although we still had 5C (41F) out, it really felt much, much colder, the result of that chilling wind.

Even though we are supposed to drop to about -5C (23F), an advantage is that we are supposed to get very clear, sunny days. After all the overcast that will be nice, even though the winter clothing layers will need to increase.
Happy weekend.
A polar vortex indeed! I think I heard the same phrase on the UK weather bulletin the other week. It reminds me of the “Total Perspective Vortex” in The Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. But that’s another story altogether 😃

Hahaha! 😊 That’s great. I haven’t thought of that book for a long time. Yes, I think this term is everywhere for the last two or three years or so. Our weather service must be getting ribbed because they have actually come out a couple of times to try to explain the term and defend the name. It seems like there’s a bit of embarrassment. Cheers.

It does look cold in your dramatic photos. There are some interesting terms these days to describe weather events; heat dome, bomb cyclone; makes me wonder what they’ll come up with next!

Right? Our weather service must be getting complaints about the terminology as it has literally come out a couple of times to explain that this is a real phenomenon (including the others you note) and that that’s its/their names. I find them so silly that it’s hard to take them seriously. 😉

Definitely not the time to go into the lake for a dip Lynette. The winds here for the last two days have been brutal and now we are in a deep freeze. The term for what happened Thursday here was a snow squall. The last time we had one in 2021, it blew shingles off my rood with 120 k/h winds. Happy weekend. Allan

Penticton does the New Year’s Day polar bear swim and there’s another one scheduled this weekend for the Frost Fest, but even though it’s +1 (the wind has disappeared and it’s now not as cold as earlier projected) I wouldn’t be joining that! 🥶
I saw that you’re pretty cold at around -20 and even if you have only a bit of wind it’s so much worse. Oh boy, Allan. I think you did a post about that 2021 storm, didn’t you? Fingers crossed that this storm doesn’t cause the need for any house repairs. This is a weekend for hunkering down with hot toddies, comfort food and good books and movies. Stay warm.

It’s like you’re bragging Lynette. 🤣 It’s -17C here right now. The high will be -15. No skiing for me. But your skies are lovely. Maggie

You’re right, Maggie. I definitely won’t do any more complaining, especially about the cold. Agreed; -15 is just too cold for skiing. Stay warm; I hope you have a cozy weekend. 😊

Such beautiful views, Lynette, wow! Storms are now named and the Polar Vortex – I guess this makes the weather forecasters feel more important.

Thank you very much, John. 😊 Yes, names for hurricanes and typhoons have been around for a long time but these overly dramatic names for other weather phenomena is coming across as pretty silly. I think our weather service has been getting complaints because they’ve tried to explain a couple of times why they’re using these terms. So over-the-top. 🙄

I guess you are referring to Environment Canada. Oh Canada! 🇨🇦

They’re the ones. 😊

Oh Canada! Sorry, I like your national song better than ours. Don’t tell anyone, Lynette… 😊

Definitely, although it turns out that we’re not as cold today as projected. It’s +1 and beautifully sunny! So nice.

Your first photo is particularly beautiful! I think the cold front is moving in throughout the continent ❄️

Thank you very much, Belinda. 😊 Yes, I saw that this cold weather is enveloping much of the continent, and that the prairies in particular either are or will become extremely cold. Now is the time for hot chocolate!

This is invigorating, isn’t it? Nippy enough to stimulate, not cold enough to chill. I plan to walk the Shoreline Trail (Port Moody) tomorrow, in this sunny, brisk weather. Should be lovely. Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you very much, Penny. It’s not as cold here as originally projected and now windless, too, but so great to see the sun! That sounds like a wonderful walk, Penny. Have a good one!

Ha! I’m with you on these ridiculous names. We’re supposed to get another cold front as well. But no clear sunny days, except for Tuesday, which I’m excited about. I can’t remember the last time I saw the sun.

We’ve actually been rather fortunate to get some sun; it has been such an enjoyable break. It has been mostly overcast and raining since about the middle of November, so I understand how you eventually just start to crave it!

Thank you very much, Barbara. 😊 The whitecaps are pretty but the wind causing them was sure chilly! Cheers.

I’m late to this post, but that “polar vortex” (yes, such drama) has come our way. As I type this it’s 5(f) degrees outside. -15c.

Oh boy, Lori. Time for hot chocolate and cozy blankets! We are a lot warmer here with -2C (28F); the entire west coast seems to have dodged this one! Stay cozy and warm.
