Above Osoyoos

Osoyoos is a community at the southern end of the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, and is directly next to the border with the United States. It’s only 60 km (37 miles) south of us from Penticton. We recently visited and took some photos of it from Anarchist Mountain, which at 1491 metres (4892 ft) above sea level provides some excellent views.

A southwestern view of Osoyoos Lake with the United States in the distance.
A western view of the lake with the Monashee Mountain range in the background.
And another western view but a bit more northerly.
Looking more toward the north.

Osoyoos is at the northernmost tip of the Sonoran Desert and can be extremely hot during the summer; it’s quite arid year-round. It’s known for its fruit orchards and the dry conditions also produce some stellar red wines. It’s a great place for outdoorsy summer holidays with lots of boating, swimming, camping and hiking and is definitely worth a visit if you like those activities – with maybe a nice glass of wine in the evenings!

Happy Sunday.

  1. Some great shots from up high Lynette, showing the landscape under autumn lighting. I love the lake shot showing the wind ripples. Have a great Sunday. Allan

  2. Ohhh mountains everywhere, wonderful! It’s like around here in a way. You have a strong sense of direction like I do, Lynette, but yours must come from flying. Lovely photos!

    1. Thank you very much, John. Yes, lots of mountains here! There’s such great hiking in this area too as you can probably imagine. I’ve always had a good sense of direction that’s been well practised over the years. Cheers.

      1. You’re welcome, Lynette, I am not aware of any big snow here, it stays in the mountains where it belongs. It does drop a few flakes in the valley once a year but it usually stays above 4000 feet where it should be. 😂👍🏻

  3. Lovely brooding photos & of course the post had me looking up the b/g of the name, “Anarchist Mountain” — enchanted to discover it is named (or so they say) for a prospector who described himself as one, “and went around with a stick of dynmite in his boot.” It’s the stick of dynamite that I love most.

    1. Thank you very much, Penny. Yes, there are lots of stories about this guy; probably only 10% are true! My favourite local beer is called “anarchist.” It’s an amber that’s densely malty and mushroomy and named after the prospector, not the mountain. Cheers. 🍻

    1. It’s definitely an area you would enjoy, Linda. For sure lots of outdoor activities and there’s some pretty good wine, too. The southern end of the Okanagan Valley tends to be more family oriented. Cheers.
