August Marmots

I haven’t recently been seeing many of our local marmot colony members. I think it’s just too hot for them and so they’re staying in their burrows where it’s much cooler.

On an early morning walk a couple of days ago – it’s too hot for me, too – I did see a few of them out and about. Someone had left them some fresh cherries which is a healthy food for marmots, so they were busy transporting them inside.

One decided that napping was much preferable to moving the produce, though!

It’s always a treat to see these sweet little animals. They seem so happy with one another and are certainly very chatty and affectionate.

Happy Friday; happy weekend.

    1. There is a bench nearby where people love to sit and watch them. Yes, they are extremely cute and endearing, especially how they seem to get on so well with each other. They were taking the cherries inside but didn’t seem to be overly concerned about them, either. A good sign that they’re eating well, I would say.

    1. There was no fighting at all, Linda. I don’t know if that behaviour is just their temperament or if they are eating really well and aren’t concerned too much about food. It could also be a combination as they seem to get on extremely well with each other, always sitting close together and chatting away in low tones.

    1. Thanks, Allan. They sure are. People love to stop and watch them and they’re okay with that as long as you don’t get too close or make sudden moves. I agree; I think they have been really hot and hanging out a lot under their rock pile at the edge of the lake. Cooler weather, yes! We have 26 and drizzle today. It’s such a nice break from the heat.

  1. Such cute creatures! Who would blame them to stay in the shade? Too hot these days😍 But the evenings are getting much cooler now, the forecast is that we will have an early autumn.

Happy Friday and weekend to you too Lynette!

    1. Thank you very much, Christie. 😊They are very adorable. People love to stop to watch them, adults and children alike. I agree; it has been too hot to think about anything except how to stay cool! We are actually having a break today – only 26 and overcast with drizzle! Feels great to have a break.

  2. Just FYI – I had a wonderful time at Selkirk Mountain Experience – but after the first post I sent from up there, WordPress decided I didn’t need a “Publish” button, so I can’t publish the rest of the posts! I don’t know if marmots live up there – there is a Marmot Lake – but there were lots of mountain goats. And I can’t send a post about them, either! If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear.

    1. I’m glad to hear that you had such a great time! Lovely. There likely are marmots there, but if it’s been hot then you might not see many of them. They also might just be hiding from humans, too. The marmots here are more tolerant of people although they don’t like it if you get too close or make sudden moves.

I had that issue with WP a few years ago. I disabled all the plugins and then the “publish” button appeared. The problem can also be caused by custom themes (if you have one). Switching to a WP theme might help. If these approaches don’t work you could try contacting the “happiness engineers” for a solution. Good luck! I’m looking forward to hearing about those goats when you’re able. Cheers.
