It’s Springy!

There are springy signs everywhere! First, I noticed a few days ago that the red maples have very suddenly started budding.

These trees are loaded with pink buds that are so pretty against the blue sky.

They will soon be leafing in great profusion.

Then I saw that the large koi in the Japanese garden fish pond have come through the winter and their dormancy in good shape.

Passing near the creek the always-hungry ducks were happy to see us with our bag of quinoa snacks, and I noticed that the green head feathers of the males are beginning to turn very iridescent, a sign that they will soon be mating.

I hope signs of spring are happening where you are, too.

  4. Happy spring Lynette. We are getting snow this AM, but not as much as those further down the QE2. Spring will get here…..eventually. Have a great day. Allan

      My friend in Medicine Hat is expecting 10-30 cm by Friday. She wishes it were rain instead but is glad of it anyway since it’s so dry. Yes, spring will eventually arrive! Cheers.

    1. This happened very quickly as I walked that route with only one day in between. They weren’t there, then two days later, presto! So great to see them, especially against a blue sky. We’re supposed to get several days of rain starting tomorrow, so things will get going after that!

    1. That’s so lovely. They must feel very safe in your garden.
      If they’re mallards, the male will have an emerald green head that will become brightly iridescent during the mating period (either has started or is starting soon). Cheers.

  8. We’re about to have four days of rain, but it doesn’t matter because we’ve had a taste of that lovely warm spring weather and it will come back as soon as the gods water all the plants.

      1. I’m always thankful for some rain, but I don’t want to live in a rainforest either. I think we’re on the warming trend (ever so slightly) and that makes me happy. Have you noticed the birds singing more in the mornings?

        1. I’ve seen lots of birds very busily chirping and flitting about everywhere, and yes, particularly in the mornings. So good to hear them.

          We’re out of the drought classification here in the valley but we’re officially still “dry,” so more rain, especially slow rain, is a good thing. Yes, if you get a lot of rain you might have moss growing on the trees!

    1. It sure is, isn’t it? It arrived here right on time – maybe the only time I’ve ever seen that happen! We’re supposed to get a couple of days of rain until Friday evening and that will be welcome too given that we are still officially “dry.”

  13. It’s very exciting to see signs of new growth and that spring is here. We just got a huge dumping of snow yesterday. I guess I better bust out the shovel again (for hopefully the last time).

    1. I heard about southern Ontario’s snow dump. After a stretch of very nice days we are getting a lovely slow rain, something that we will continue to require since we’re still officially classified as “dry.” Your March seems to be going out like a lion, that’s for sure!
