A Clear Lake Scene

This morning Okanagan Lake was much more visible and the sky considerably cleaner. Officials are describing the forest fires in our area as “held,” which means they are under control and on their way to being completely extinguished.

Clear air.

We saw some smoke later in the day but it was comparatively little and indicated that the fire crews have made tremendous progress. It’s such wonderful news!

  1. Clear air and less wildfire danger is a good thing. I know where the smoke went though. It is here. We are at an 8 on the AQI this morning. Hopefully winds push it out soon. Happy Friday Lynette. Allan

    1. Thanks, Allan. Oh boy. So sorry to hear that you’re socked in by smoke. We’re expecting more rain today (really, all of BC needs to be soaked), so maybe that will help, although there are so many fires in northern BC that it might not matter much. The smoke you’re getting could also be coming from the Shuswap where there’s another bad fire. Nevertheless I hope it clears up soon.

  2. That’s great, Lynette. I know where the smoke went. It came down here to Vancouver Island. It’s pretty thick. I could taste it in the air this morning. But I think it’s from some fires on the island; not Okanagan smoke. There was no fragrance of fruit in the smoke. More of fir cones. I’m glad you have clearer skies though. You’ve had plenty of smoke there – more than your share.

    1. I know what you mean about tasting it and being to tell what’s been burning. So sorry to hear that you’re being whacked by smoke. The Okanagan fires are on the verge of being extinguished, but the fires in the Shuswap are still so bad (and in the north, too). I hope your air clears soon, but the only real solution is getting these fires out. We need lots of slow rain.

    1. Thank you very much. The Okanagan is gorgeous when it’s not on fire and smothered in smoke. 🥹 We hope they’re over soon, as well. We need lots of slow, slow rain as there is another big fire in the Shuswap and of course there are fires everywhere in the north. I’m not surprised that you’ve heard about them in Turkey since the fires we’re experiencing are the worst on record.

    1. Thank you very much, Lori. It’s funny that I feel a bit guilty because our nearby fires are almost gone but there are still so many others burning fiercely and taking homes and possessions. At this point I just want to see lots of soaking rain everywhere.

        1. Thank you, Lori. I agree that I have a minor form of it. Thanks for the suggestion; I have already done a couple of donations. I know that this guilt will dissipate but at the moment it feels a bit wrong to be okay.

  3. You’re safe, where you are? I’ve been following the horrific news about BC and on into Yukon and NWT, and thought of you and other friends. A relief to know the news has improved for you. Slightly smoky here in Vancouver, but we in the city are the lucky ones, no right to complain about anything.

    1. Hi Penny, thanks for asking. I am in Penticton, not NWT and am safe. I am retiring at the end of October and had always planned to finish my last few months remotely so am at home in the Okanagan. When I left NWT in May there were smoky skies from fires all over NWT, BC and northern Alberta, and they are still so very terrible. I am contact with friends and colleagues from the north who are scattered everywhere.
The horrendous smoke we experienced last week was from the large fire that hit West Kelowna, Westbank FN, Lake Country and Kelowna.
