On our way west we encountered an enormous rain storm on the northern prairies of Alberta.
Prairie rain storms can start and stop suddenly, and this one came to an abrupt halt.
Soon we encountered clearing skies and continued our drive under clear conditions.

On our way to NWT two weeks ago we drove through the same weather except it occurred at the end of the day. My husband and I wondered jokingly if it had been raining for the entire two weeks!

That has been the strange thing about the summer in our area. Very few storms, especially thunderstorms and not a bunch of rain, since June. Certainly do not want rain now, as farmers are in the middle of the harvest. Have a great week Lynette. Allan

Thanks, Allan. On our way to NWT two weeks ago we saw many lightening storms, including all the way into NWT. We’re encountering them again, and yes, it’s not a good time right now with the harvesting. We’re in Edson this morning, and it’s clear and dry; hopefully it stays that way for a while.

I hope you get some soon! Northern Alberta seems to have had lots more than it needs, especially now that it’s harvest time and the farmers want the rain to stop. Weird weather this summer.

It’s so unusual, Lori. The north has had 30C (86F) in late August, there’s been rain where it’s normally dry and dry where it should be rainy. Crazy.

Ah yes, prairie weather. It never likes to do anything by degrees, does it! I’ve got lots of memories of wondering about rain while in Grasslands NP in Sask. The only track out of the park is dirt, and up a steep-sided coulee, so it’d be easy to get stuck there.

Yes, I’ve been to Grasslands, so I know what you mean. It seems the weather everywhere this summer has been off-key, but the suddenness and abrupt conclusion of these intense prairie storms hasn’t changed.
