It may be snow white up here in NWT, but for that reason, I think it’s time for a Friday flower.

The photo above, taken a couple of years ago, is of a bunch from one of my lavender pots. Lavender is said to bring luck. In ancient times, it was burned in bonfires to ward off evil or to entice good fortune.
Despite its reputation as an “old lady” flower, I have always loved it for its fragrance and pretty purple flowers. Dried, it can last a long time; I like to keep it in my closet to repel moths, and outside, it repels mosquitoes.

And, as if that’s not enough, lavender scent will help you to sleep, and more deeply, as well.
It’s certainly one of nature’s beautiful presents. Do you grow lavender?
Happy Friday; happy weekend. 🙂
I’ve never grown lavender, but I do spray it on our linens each night. I love it.

I’m not a particularly good gardener and it grows easily for me. It’s also reasonably hardy and will survive a light frost or snow. Mine was in pots and I brought them inside for winter, but there are “winter varieties.” So nice to have the scent around while falling asleep. 🙂

Yes, I grow lavender. The bees love it and so do I.

Sitting in your garden and watching the bees buzzing around the lavender must be wonderful.

Lavender is one of my favourite scents and plants. I grew some out on my balcony last summer. It did pretty well.

Isn’t it great? Lavender likes warm and dry – it does very well in the Okanagan Valley (that’s where my home is). They seem to do well in a pot garden, too.

If a plant does not WANT to live in my Zone 4 climate, on my mostly wooded land – and lavender is marginal – I can’t be bothered. Daffodils, now, they are happy here.

Hahaha. 🙂 I love daffodils – so pretty. Yes – you have to work with what works.

I finally planted some more lavender last year. I’d had a plant for a while, but it died several years ago. I do like lavender, but I can’t be around it in any concentration or for long or it will trigger a migraine. Of course, I figured that out when I had a huge container of the stuff I was using to make lavender eye pillows. It was not a fun time.

It gives you migraines? So sorry to hear that! I always find it so relaxing. Such a shame that it doesn’t work for you. There are lots of other great plants that have lovely scents and will keep bugs away (rosemary, for instance).

It’s one of the few natural scents that bother me, but so many things that are scented can do that to me and the older I get, the worse it seems to get. I haven’t tried growing rosemary. I might have to look into that one.

I’m not a big fan of artificial scents either, especially in the detergent section of the grocery store. I’ll start sneezing for sure. Same with the perfume or cologne section at dept. stores. There are some perfumes that I really like (and that don’t bother me), but they are very expensive. I have a couple that were presents.
Rosemary is lovely – woody and a little like pine. Excellent herb for chicken!

Lavender isn’t one of my favorites, but I do think they are so pretty to the eye. I’ve also used it in essential oils and such for its helpful properties (you mentioned). Thanks for sharing the beautiful flowers.

You’re welcome, Lori. 🙂 I do find them very pretty, and the fact that biting bugs hate them is a great advantage! I hope you’re continuing to mend and feel better. Have a good weekend. 🙂

Lovely Lynette. Thank you. Lavender blooms year round at The Holler. I wish I could send you some. Burl Ives used to sing at the Library when I was little. Synchronicity.

Thank you. 🙂 Burl Ives at your library when you were little – I love it when those little connections occur. 🙂

Our lavender died off a year or so ago, but our neighbour’s new extension due to start next week will mean a makeover for our garden, so I’ll be planting new later this year. It’s a lovely plant for all the reasons you say, Lynette.

I am looking forward to the time when I can have my little “pot” garden again with herbs, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and lavender. Have fun with your makeover. 🙂

I LOVE lavender and was thrilled to learn it grows well here. Am now seriously considering filling my front yard with it! 🙂

Lavender is a big favourite of mine too Lynette. I grow a few varieties in my garden and look forward to them every summer. I also cut and dry them for indoors. They are very special, and your photos are wonderful 🙂

Thank you, Mei. 🙂 Oh yes, I love having the dried ones inside (I even have some in my vehicles). Such a lovely, gentle fragrance.
