Jasper National Park

Alberta’s Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Rocky Mountains and was established in 1907.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Dark Sky Preserve and was also the backdrop for a Marilyn Monroe movie, “River of No Return.” It has one of my favourite hotels as well – Jasper Park Lodge.

If you like to hike, walk, kayak, canoe or just watch the animals, Jasper is wonderful. Loads of trails, lakes and rivers, and, of course, there are hot springs in which to relax those tired muscles after a good day of exercise amidst gorgeous scenery.

    1. When we drive from NWT to Penticton, one of the best parts is going through the park (the mountains generally, but the park in particular). We try to arrange it so that we stay at the Overlander.

    Your photos are always so elegant, luxurious to behold.

    I’ve never heard of a “Dark Sky Preserve” and at first when I read those words my mind came up with several options including a science fiction scenario and a cabal like the Cult of Kosmos (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey), then it went AH! of course places without light pollution!… now I’m going to look it up. Always do things backwards 😉

      There’s some debate about whether it should be a “preserve”or a “reserve,” although I honestly haven’t read up much on the difference in terminology. What I do know is that everything stands out – stars, the Aurora, even clouds. We have a dark sky preserve nearby at Buffalo National Park and there have been some mild meteor showers lately, so that’s been an amazing sight against the very dark sky. We’ve started our winter snowfall now though (that will keep up on and off for about a month), so there’s a lot of cloud atm and not much chance to see the meteors.

  6. Looks like a wonderful place to spend time. Just to say, I remember the movie well -gives away my age. I think Robert Mitchum was also in it and I think the theme tune was sung by a guy called Tex Williams.

  16. I would love to get there. It’s a long way away, but worth it, I’m sure. I’m hoping to get to the southern dark sky equivalent at Big Bend, TX this spring!

    1. I hope you are able to come for a visit. Outside of Canada, it’s not a particularly well- known park. Banff and other more southerly parks are more famous, so it’s less busy in the summer. The hiking and scenery is so wonderful. 🙂
